Any ideas what the scaffolding under the edge of the bridge deck is for?
i would guess it has to do with the expansion joint rehabilitation going on at the moment.
as to the service station, i don't think that will ever be developed to anything large; i would say it is orphaned. i personally like the architecture of it, very old school and not seen around anymore. i always thought it would make a funky restaurant/cafe space if renovated. i mean it would have a large covered porch.
I always thought the same, that would be such a cool diner spot. Close to the beach (it's even in the station name!) and such a rare classic design that's actually original. I wonder who owns it, surely they would have some plans for a spot like that, maybe they were waiting for VH to finish construction before starting anything
They have installed new spot light lighting features attached to every bridge column. I haven’t seen them turned on yet but you can kind of see them in the above photos.
I think that metal covering and the pipes/tubes coming up out of it are related to the chandelier and its mechanical/electrical performance. That's just a guess from stopping to watch it twirl the other day though.
If it was to guard the conduit, they should have just done some kind of cladding all the way up. I can't for this whole precint to be done, it still feels very unfinished because there's still construction underway. Really want the final finished product once all the VH buildings are done.
What's the latest on the 601 Beach project? I always see rezoning and DP apps posted, but never sure once they are all approved

There was just the revised application last October, I doubt anything has been approved yet.
A pretty stinging takedown of Bjarke Ingels which no doubt will have some forumers apopleptic. It will be interesting to see how well the building handles rain etc.
sure, because all of us want to live in soviet blocks. sure there is something to be said about that, but there is also something to said about creating a pleasing environment with good design. no one thinks soviet boxes are great.
might i remind people of Bijlmer, when architects and urban planners thought they knew what people wanted/needed and what was good for them.
Those stupid Soviet block apartment blocks leak the same (referencing the somewhat simple design principle behind some apartment blocks in Korea). You have indoor balconies and have exposed piping that freezes and creates the exact same problems. There's nothing in the simplicity of the design that totally miss potential failure points.
If he actually went through and broke down the engineering of Vancouver House and why it will leak that would be interesting.
This is cringe. As if the complexity of Vancouver House is at all representative of anything more than one building every few years in a region of 2.5 million people.
But of course, planners will latch onto this meme and use it to try and kill the next Vancouver House that comes along in a couple years. I actually can't overstate how much I resent the article - creating a narrative that will likely be used to deprive us of the already very few instances of daring architecture which manage to survive our regulatory regime and developer bean counting.
