I really like that Stantec tower. (The rest of the Edmonton skyline isn't anything special, IMO.)

Very elegant building. It's the tallest in the country outside of Toronto, is it not?

Actually....Stantec isn't the best looking tower in Edmonton. I find JW Marriot better looking as well as other front runners that are smaller and sharper looking. But yes....the tallest until Alldritt is approved at 280.0 meters.

I thought Stantec was a dual-tower thingy - style-wise I actually preferred Shorter Stantec anyway, which means we're in agreement now that I discovered it's a separate building.

These two towers, similar in style, appeared together in the Edmonton skyline at the same time everyone was talking about "the new Stantec tower" so I had always assumed they were one thing - a bit like if the Sears Tower in Chicago had all of its vertical square sections physically separated a bit (we'd likely still call the whole thing a tower instead of nine towers).

you mean 9 featureless black boxes

The only reason Sears became an architectural icon was because of it's height and the title of world's tallest which it held for nearly a quarter of a century, it certainly wasn't because of the dazzling or creative design

The Legends Tower (JW Marriot) is definitely Edmonton’s most beautiful tower, from top to bottom it is quality. The glass reminds me of Calgary’s Brookfield Place but it’s form and functions set it above that even. I just wish it had a nice light feature crown, even like a video screen sort of thing that could show wild plays or something, that would really be something.

Anyways, here’s a sample of the disgusting amount of skyline shots I took on my run today...

The Ville-Marie expressway easterly view has changed a lot from those days when I would regularly drive downtown. Quite a bit of woot.

The skyline has almost doubled in size from this vantage point in only 10-15 years...

IMO Manulife is still the most attractive tower in Edmonton. JWM is definitely a nice addition though.

Aldritt has been approved for 3 years. It's not the tallest tower ever proposed in Alberta either. Reasoning I say that is because proposed, approved means shit when it comes to building a 280 metre tower in Edmonton.

JW Marriott is really an average tower. It's just new and tall.

By Edmonton standards, JW Marriott is light years above average. We’re not talking on the global level, we are talking about the nicest tower in Edmonton. It’s certainly not Stantec due to obvious lack of quality and design, what would yours be?

I can see why Esquire says the CN Building.

It's not my thing to rank towers or whatever like that. I judge by the design quality with an emphasis on physical prominence and It's an average tower. What's built around it has no input on my decision.

I don't like the balconies or the transition from hotel to residential. There's not much else to the design. It feels engineered than created. The balconies are designed around marketable layouts than as an exterior expression. It's a strange feeling given it's a H+P's copycat inspiration.

Beautiful image of Vancouver there.

I don't really have a building I completely favour in Edmonton to the point of being my favourite, although I'd have to say going by my understanding of what exists in the city, the CN tower (as made by esquire as well) is my choice. It's just a well executed and smart design.

For me personally, Manulife is still my favourite in Edmonton. I do like JW Marriott and Stantec. For some older buildings there, CN Tower as well as Telus Plaza north and south I really like as well.

The Butterfly is going to make a good mark on the skyline from that angle I think.

The thing about that is that this tower would hold its own anywhere, anytime and is certainly deserving of more praise than people give it.
