Victoria's dope.

It's not Barcelona or anything, but it's tight and it's cute and it's quiet.

It's the size of Windsor and Gatineau (almost), and look a the difference. There are geographical and historical perspectives to this of course, but still.

In many ways, Victoria is the west coast's version of Quebec city. Although it probably has more in common with Halifax, which is the same size, and is also a capital city.

Compared to the last picture of Vancouver just above, it's really quite surprising how different in some ways the two cities are. Victoria was fortunate that it grew more slowly as one style of architecture does not dominate, there's a decent mix, although except for the 100 plus year old buildings there are no new architectural giants, just a steady, safe, modest, clean, quiet mix, which somehow has led to a vibrancy. In the past decade or so it has transformed it's image from a place for the 'newly wed and nearly dead' to a city that's described by visitors as a 'bustling little city'. It can be a quirky place, leaning more towards 'unusual and sometimes WTF', not in the way that Portland is weird, because Portland actually tries to be that.. Victoria just is. I think because in the end it attracts dreamers and lost souls equally, politically it's a terribly run city (extremist Victoria City council, 13 different municipalities for a region of 400 thousand, yet somehow it works, sort of.

It's not as important as Halifax regionally, is more inward looking, yet now with a confidence it could care less about where it stands in relation to the rest of the country, never mind BC. Quebec is gorgeous of course, unfortunately never made it to Halifax on the last trip out east, but Saint John NB is a forgotten gem, gets no respect at all, but if all the cards fell right it could be another rising star in Canada.

Great to see some towers break the long-standing Tabletop of Vancouver's skyline. When I lived in Van, the entire downtown skyline was almost literally 33 stories. Wall Centre came a long and things started to improve.

Lovely Van set. That Metrotown shot from Stanley park is incredible...Metrotown has long had highrises, but they were competely linear (along Kingsway) back when I worked in the neighborhood. It has clearly grown up a lot. Maybe there is hope for Mississauga City Centre.
