Construction is starting on buildings #5 and 6 at King's Wharf in Dartmouth. One building is 26 storeys and the other is 12.

There will be some townhouses too. Not sure when those start. I have not found a good rendering yet of the taller tower but here's an elevation:

I'm not going to lie though, as mundane as it is I love watching steel towers go up. I will like this until they start cladding it.

That will be pretty refreshing to see, I'm glad it's steel construction. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if it was the same height as it's neighbour, the second tower...albeit it doesn't matter at all now of course.

I care most that it competes the complex. I like the idea that Toronto can have a shadowing guideline that is actually enforced eventough i'm not completely sold on the specifics of this one. The grandfathered buildings already cast significant shadows. It isn't simply about cashing in on development ( example, debating section 37 funds more than the value of the proposed plan) which happens too frequently.

The cost of replacing the stone cladding, which was failing, was deemed to be too high. Also, the large parking structure adjacent to it was closed due to its poor condition. So in the end, police HQ was moved to another older building downtown which was renovated for them.

Personally I won't miss the PSB. It really isn't that great of a building. It has a few of the derided elements of brutalism without the things that make brutalism beautiful, i.e. exposed concrete. It looks more like a warehouse than anything else. The plans for the site will result in an improvement to the area.

I would still modify to full height windows for each bay if the budget was there and the majority of the precast of salvageable. I don't care for the original. Brutalism needs a degree of structural expressionism This is a box with a Brutalist facade motif.
