^ Weren't the MPI executive offices in the Eaton Place/Cityplace complex from the beginning, or close to it? Regardless of where the "official" head office was, the decision makers were always in Winnipeg. Much the same as with Wawanesa... their head office is a nice nod to the company's roots, but the company executives are not actually located there.

Here's what Wawanesa's head office in Wawanesa actually looks like... pretty good for a town of under 600!

Actually, the Sipiweske Museum is in in the far humbler 1903 Wawanesa Mutual Building across the street:

At one point there was talk of have having them move to Brandon, but then it was decided at the Government level that they could stay in the Administrative office at City Place.

External documents could be mailed to Brandon's head office and then sent back via IDM to Winnipeg.

Pretty cool as far as parkades go. I'd have happily taken that instead of the lot that exists there now.

The then and now pic above is kind of sad. I get that many of the churches left as downtown became less residential in character in the early 20th century, but it's hard to believe that nothing more than that squat one storey building replaced it. Or was there something else there between that pair?

^^ And why did that church disappear after only 14 years? In 1914 there were still a lot of people downtown.

Knox Presbyterian/United moved to a bigger, grander building nearby (which they still occupy) on Central Park. According to their website which actually has a decent amount of information about their building, the former church on the site of Giant Tiger was 33 years old when they moved out so it had at least a few decades under its belt by that point.

I don't think that proposal is a parkade, it was proposed for the parking lot site. It looks like an office building.

oh wow - i love it. but am i looking at this right? was the proposal at the time to demolish the bank of toronto building (=la carnita?)

While doing citation work on University Stadium on Wikipedia today, I found this cool ad published on June 12, 1967 in the Trib for a British-made "MGB" car, At the bottom of the ad are two dealers, one Burnell Motor Co. (Portage at Burnell), the other Motor Sales (Donald at York Ave.).I've always wondered what was on the Donald St. land, before it became a parking lot.

I remember Motor Sales on Main Street along with Consolidated Mercury, in the old Ford building that became Century Plaza. I think it was also Century Motors as well. My dad had cars from Motor Sales. There were a lot of low-budget British cars around back then.

Oh right, they were in touch a couple of years ago and I gave them one of my photo postcards of the old church to use. They did a good job. I thought the church moved because it was becoming too noisy and the residential area north of Portage was disappearing. The new location is a lot more central to what at the time would have been an upper middle class neighbourhood around Central Park.

Motor Sales was run by a young Gerry Gordon before he opened one of Canada's first Mazda dealerships.
