Given that there has been a lot of talk here about the new Saskatoon Public Library building, I thought I'd share a bit of information regarding the status of the project.

In March of this year, the City of Saskatoon issued an RFP for owner's Representation Services. Those proposals were due on April 20th with the successful proponent to be selected by mid-May.

Among the duties of the Owner's Rep (likely a Project Management firm) to occur in Phase 1 of their duties is the development of a detailed project plan, a schedule and an budget. Procurement of Design Services isn't until Phase 2 of the Owner's Rep's services. Oversight of Design Services and Procurement of Construction Services are Phases 3 & 4 of their duties.

The RFP goes on to list some milestones that will be of interest to most of us:

• Procurement of Design Services: June 20 - Fall 20
• Oversight of Design Services: Fall 2020 - Winter 2022
• Procurement of Construction Services: Winter 2022 - Spring 2023
• Oversight of Construction Services: Summer 2023 - Fall 2025
• Logistics for Occupancy: Spring 2025 - Winter 2026
• Post-Occupancy Review: Early 2026 - Early 2027

So, looks like a new Library opening is likely sometime in 2026.

Lots of thought-provoking ideas being shared here these days! With plans for a new library in the works, I wonder what will happen to the current building. Is the building itself still in reasonably good shape? Could it see continued use for other purposes, possibly for community-oriented groups/events? Or is it likely to be demolished? If so, what would people like to see in its place? I live in Saskatoon Tower, and the library is a nice boost of vibrancy and activity for the area. When the library moves, I hope that level of activity can be maintained by whatever takes its place. Maybe a residential tower with shops and offices in the base? What would you all like to see there?

How reusable is the building? Would it have to be gutted to bring it to code, or could it just be used for offices? i.e. are the fire code violations specific given the building's use or generally applicable? I'd like to keep the building there. It could do for a River Quarry treatment. Preferably one that reflects the heritage of the building. Like it or not, it is iconographic for Saskatoon. Would be a shame to lose it as much as it was to lose the Ross Building or other pre-war downtown blocks.

I know that at one point, the schedule had them well underway in Jan, but they had not started by Feb. I know this because an aquaintance got a fantastic deal for one of the ballrooms in Jan... greatly discounted because of the anticipated construction, but there was none. As far as I know they still have not started yet, but I am not 100% certain which is why I was reluctant to answer.

Seriously, though, I am in agreement with you. That building has never been much to look at and most people would question its historical significance. On a related note, I just heard that those involved with the Library Board on their new facility and have found them extremely challenging to work with. Secondhand information, but I don't doubt it. Publicly funded boards seem to want everything, especially when spending taxpayer money.

As a reminder, I believe this is the last rendering we saw for this lot... I have previously posted my opinion of the architectural merits of these buildings and will not repeat them here.

It's especially disappointing/annoying because before the property was put up for sale, the city hired a local architectural firm to create a set of Architectural control guidelines for that site:

(Search "410" in the document and you should find all of the relevant sections related to that site that were discussed at the meeting as well as the actual report (Pages 84-119))

It does say that the developer would have to submit a proposal that would comply with the architectural guidelines as a condition of the sale.

If you look at section 4 of the report (page 101 of the PDF), it lists several guidelines related to the exterior appearance. I would say Baydo's current rendering wouldn't comply with more than a couple of them.
