Unfortunately, I mostly agree. If the quarantine is only another 6-8 weeks, I actually could see most restaurants give it a go and re-open (as long as they can work with their bank/creditors), there might be a surge of demand early on for a month or so, but the economy is going to be sluggish for the balance of year, and likely beyond. Plus the quarantine is going to be eased over the summer, months with historically weaker sales locally. Restaurants are going to soldier on, but the poor economy ahead will cause many of them to slowly close. Could be a contraction of 25% or so. Rough times ahead.

I’m hoping if this curve flattens over the next couple weeks. Maybe by the beginning or at least mid May restaurants and bars could reopen and limit the amount of people. Social distance within the restaurant. What’s the difference when we have packed grocery stores with people touching everything.

I am not sure if you had to go out this weekend or not but we have implemented what CA and Europe has been doing where stores now have to limit the amount of people who are allowed in and out at a given time. Most of them now have cuing lines with the social distance standards applied in tape or chalk. So the stores were not as crowded as they had been.

That was definitely my experience this weekend. I did my usual Sunday morning Trader Joe’s run and found I had to wait about half an hour to enter the store. Store employees had placed tape every six feet to show how shoppers should maintain distance among one another while waiting. Once I was inside, I found it to be less crowded than any Sunday morning I can remember in years.

CoStar has a report this morning saying that CA could lose a 1/3 of it's restaurants from Coronavirus. That would be astonishing if it holds true.

I expected worse, to be fair. Reality isn't pleasant and rosy some times.

Do you have a link?

The industry here, especially SF that has more restaurant seats than its population, is extremely precarious with high costs, onerous regulations, and a flaky labor market--San Jose is a bit more normal. Even before the pandemic, the industry was yelling at SF to fix things.

Oddly, I don't know if anything has thrown in the towel, but I suppose the state is waiting for the smoke to clear from the fire. The sushi restaurant downstairs isn't even doing takeout or delivery without so much a sign on the window though however, and one brewpub started doing takeout with reduced hours--perhaps to-go cocktails and beer will stay a thing. I'm seeing a LOT more advertising from other restaurants in the South Bay perhaps out of desperation.

Either way, you’re still walking right by other people.

The Small Business loans as part of the stimulus are extremely forgiving
  • low interest rates
  • up to 10 million
  • all loan dollars used for Rent/Mortgage, Payroll (for existing and laid off staff) and utilities DOES NOT need to be paid back and is then treated as a grant.

Should be able to help lots of restaurants get through the spring.

Historic house just north of Cibo at 609 N 5TH AVE is being remodeled by Motley Design Group and turned into a restaurant/bar called BOSO or SOBO (both names have been associated, not sure which is the real one).

"Scope Text = Rehabilitate (E) historic building, demolish later additions on the east, add about 1,750sf of commercial kitchen and
bathrooms to the east, add a new exterior stair for access to 2nd story, add new elevated wood deck with trellis to the south." - from Plan Review document obtained from My Community app.

Anyone remember Little Cleo’s? It was in my experience the best restaurant Sam Fox ever created, but he closed it after a short while. Now, it’s being revived for one night only as a pop-up. I’ve already placed my order:

It was a seafood restaurant with a raw bar within it. It gave way for an expansion of Culinary Dropout.
