Activity continues at Baydo site on 25th St. Two excavators, a front end loader, and a construction trailer have arrived on site.

I'm assuming this is still acting as a place-hold for the equipment from Broadway. There's no way Baydo, a local company, has the means to develop two large-scale developments during a pandemic.

The activity on site seems to be something with more purpose than just parking equipment / excess dirt on the land. The excavators were working when I drove by.

Walked by Broadway site today and in addition to the tall crane, there is a crane "boom"(?) in the pit, as well.

Maybe they are going to find it economical to temporarily moved the infill from their broadway project there and are going to have a hayday of infill removal soon? Seems weird, but I can’t think of any other logic. That lot had to start development within a certain timeframe so they may see infill removal from another lot as something that will give them more time before they actually initiate serious infill removal (sounds whacky, but so was that disaster of an infill project that didn’t secure full financing in Regina).

If the infrastructure funds come to fruition, what projects would be the priority? The have to be "shovel ready". I'm thinking the library would be the obvious one. What else?

Unfortunately I doubt the library will meet the criteria as it’s nowhere near ready for “shovels in the ground.” I suspect it will take at least twelve to eighteen months of continued consultation with the community plus the process of a design once an architect has been chosen. At this point I don’t believe the city has selected one?

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to be wrong!

- I recall reading that the city wanted to build a new civic centre??
- Improved sewer/water lines??
- City could speed up its led removal program
- Id love to see that pedestrian bridge near the Weir
- Bridge rehabilitation?
- Idylwyld project that has been finalized I believe. IMO doing this would be a huge benefit to the DT region. Idylwyld drastically needs major TLC and has for a very long time.

These are just some ideas I thought of. Would love to hear others you guys can think of

Not necessarily my priority, but I think it will be BRT. Would have been great to see Library, but agree it is a long way off from shovel in ground.

Sorry for the random intrusion, but has the city ever considered turning 21 Street E into a pedestrian mall between Midtown Mall and the Bessborough?

I believe it has been brought up before, I know I have thought about/mentioned it. But there were also a series of hand sketches/renders of re-envisioning downtown down a few years back and I think there were some sketches of what that might look like.

I think it would be a great idea in the summer (seasonal pedestrian mall), as long as you can make the case that in the winter parking would be allowed to return. Because we all know the parking issue will be the first thing cried about.

I thought that the library already had a design but I'm probably wrong. BRT might be a good bet.

I think that your position sounds reasonable. As someone who neither works nor lives downtown, but does like to frequent downtown restaurants, I think that eliminating parking on 21st would significantly impact businesses in the winter. On a cold January night, most people want a quick walk from their car to their destination. If that's not available downtown, their money will get spent elsewhere.
