In its very modest way, you could almost say that Mississauga is a tiny bit like our version of Dubai.

Okay, that might be too much of a stretch.

The Square One Shopping Centre redevelopment is going to add 37 towers to the Mississauga skyline over the course of the next 2 decades. That's the plan anyways. I'm not sure there is enough demand for that many towers in Mississauga.

According to Retail Insider, Downtown Mississauga could rival Downtown Vancouver and Montreal in the future...

Quote:
When the Square One mega project is completed, downtown Mississauga will be one of the most populous in Canada. Over the next two decades, downtown Mississauga is expected to double in population and could approach 100,000 residents. Downtown Toronto’s population is said to be approaching 300,000 people within its boundaries. The downtown Vancouver peninsula houses more than 110,000 residents and downtown Montreal is home to about 125,000 residents currently.

What it lacks in height, it makes up for in breadth.

Like that Rogers Place angle. The arena with the tall towers jutting upwards gives off a big city look.

The Marilyns really should have been somewhere in Toronto. Mississauga isn't worthy of them. They stick out like a sore thumb.

that's ok.. Toronto has enough. why isn't Mississauga "worthy" of them, but Toronto is? They stick out just like the Ice district towers stick out in Edmonton.. thats sorta the point.. they're suppose to stand out..or the CN tower sticks out like a sore thumb in Toronto even..so what?

Disagree. Mississauga needs them far more than Toronto does. The last thing we need is a fabulous centre surrounded by 50km of garbage in every direction. We need great looking buildings throughout Greater Toronto - Hamilton. The idea that high standards are only necessary in the core is one I'll never get behind.

Not saying they don’t belong in Mississauga but they do look quite alien when compared to everything else in those photos.

For me, bad architecture vs good architecture isn't something that can be decided based on assessing a building in a vacuum. Good architecture is the interplay between a building's function and its aesthetics and its aesthetics and function in relation to its context. I wouldn't look at a building picture or rendering against a white background and say that the architecture is good or bad any further than saying whether or not I can think of any contexts where it would be a good/appropriate match.

Absolute to me screams gritty, edgy, big city excitement and glamour. I can imagine it against a backdrop of brick midrises with exterior metal fire escapes, billboards with florescent lighting, cool bars, night clubs galleries. It would enhance such a setting and the setting would enhance it.

But in a setting surrounded by bland suburban highrises with weird pomo faux-chateaux rooflines and such, it makes me think, "Well, this area is full of tacky low brow shit, so while this might appear kinda cool at first glance, given the context it must actually just be more of that." In other words, you can't elevate 50km of mediocrity by sprinkling it with the odd highlight or exception. You need to raise the baseline. Then the exceptions have a context from which they can shine.

The Marilyns are like the Bow in Calgary: they're out of place and don't fit the context. Like a Hollywood starlet in a sequin dress pumping gas into a Hyundai.

They're so feminine that I think they would look best in a stylishly masculine environment that would set off the yin against the yang. Something that Toronto doesn't have.

Ideally they should be in midtown Manhattan.

Edit: Nouvellecosse is essentially saying the thing I am, just more eloquently.

Do people from Mississauga consider themselves Torontonians first?
re: The Marilyn buildings. I just chuckled to myself picturing these two buildings here in Ottawa to shake things up. We just have nothing to trade Mississauga for them.
