Yeah, when the 912' iteration was first unveiled, several here likened it to a One Chicago/NEMA lovechild that moved to Detroit.

Whatever height this tower ends up being, I hope the final design doesn't deviate too much from that one.

A height that keeps getting mentioned lately is ~650 ft, and some guy on YouTube even claims to have gotten this figure from a "reliable source". If we pretend that 650 ft is really the final roof height, it's not that far from the RenCen's 727 ft. An 80 ft spire would enable the Hudson Tower to become Detroit's new tallest building based on structural height, and 80 ft is only 12.3% of 650 ft so it's reasonable.

a little birdy who claims to have seen the construction drawings for the tower has told me that the roof height will be 684'.

i cannot verify the authenticity of it, just passing the info along.

please don't shoot the messenger.

if true, that'll make it tall enough for 2nd tallest in the city, roughly 40' shy of the ren cen @ 727' tall.

What did the design look like?

Was it similar or entirely new?

the little birdie didn't speak to anything on that front.

just a height figure.

but my hunch is that the design is likely more or less along the lines of what we've see so far.

if the design was significantly changed, i suspect the little birdie would have said something about that.

At 684', that is a substantial height and would have a big impact on the skyline despite not being the tallest, no?

Yes. As I said in the post where i reported the 684' height figure, if true, it would make Hudsons Tower the 2nd tallest building in the Detroit skyline, only ~40 shy of the Ren Cen Marriott (the current #1 @ 727'), and ~65' taller than Ally Detroit Center (the current #2 @ 619').

And being located roughly a 1/2 mile away from the Ren Cen Marriott, it would certainly have a very significant height presence in its immediate part of the skyline.

Why would they not build an extra 40 feet? What's wrong with developers these days?

Still a good height for such a city though...

IMO this is positive news (assuming it's reliable), because I was expecting quite a bit less than 684'. So I am definitely not shooting you!

I hope Gilbert is still interested in making this Detroit's tallest building. All it takes is a spire.

well, FWIW, the little birdie got back to me and said that the design is basically a shrunk down version of what we've seen so far, and that there will not be any spire or any other type of roof-top embellishment that will take the height higher than 684'.

the little birdie also said that the overall design of the tower is now more-or-less set, as they're currently digging into the nuts and bolts of the construction docs. use of the tower remains residential & hotel.

again, this is all just the song of a little bird, so take it with some grains of salt and the rest of the usual internet rumor precautions.

Yea, it still hits the 200 meter mark, which is the skyscraper threshold IMO.

It looked great at 912', but will this design still hold up at 684'?

^ here's quick & dirty photoshop.

caveat: proportions are probably all kinds of wrong. this is just a very quick 75% vertical reduction.

Of course the more widely accepted threshold is 150 m. Even with this more modest threshold, Detroit hasn't built a "skyscraper" since 1993, so I am still excited, though not as excited as when we thought this would be 912 ft (278 m).

That's what I was wondering as well. If the girth stays the same, then the building may look too chubby, in which case adding an appropriately designed spire would help.

UPDATE: I just saw Steely Dan's compressed diagram. It looks better than expected!

here it is @ 684' with its actual detroit siblings, not those random chicago towers.

same caveat as before, this is just a quick and dirty 75% vertical down-scaling.

That is actually pretty cool!

It will still have one hell of an impact on the skyline, it still has the Nema Chicago Vibe, and it's 200 Meters which is pretty good.

It might be shorter than what it was before but imagine Wolf point East from Chicago, Hudson tower is taller than that, sure by only 24 ft (EDIT:16 ft) but when you look up at Wolf point east it's pretty tall compared to a person and definitely the Detroit skyline.

according to the CTBUH, Wolf Point East in chicago is 668', so actually only a 16' difference, but yes, very close overall.

here are some recent shots of WPE that give a good sense of how tall a building of that kinda height is.

wolf point east 1

wolf point east 2
