Talked to somebody who knows. Theater tower is real. Target is for it to be the cities tallest. Final drawings out in the next month or so.

With the Theater Tower wanting to push higher, hopefully it will make Kensington raise their height.

As both are likely to be under construction around the same time, I do wonder if there will be any competition between the 2 projects to claim the tallest.

With Kensington already laying the gauntlet of 448' to the highest point, maybe the Theater Tower can shoot for 475' or dare we hope 500'...

Well, if the beautiful theater is going to be irreversibly destroyed, I suppose the best case scenario is that it’s replaced by another decent skyscraper for the city. If only we could have our cake and eat it, too.

Welcome! I don't think any dates are public and I'm guessing the tower has to go through some city approvals first, especially if they're going to request to build higher than the 375' height limit. There's also the still-controversial matter of the theater demolition itself.

I also wonder if there will be any substantial overall design changes to the tower. I quite liked the design of the base of the tower but the rest was underwhelming. Here are some images for reference:

Thanks Atlas! It is not a bad looking tower but I hope they spice it up with some curves, etc. It certainly is not a new tallest in that image. They will have to add at least a hundred feet to it if they want it to be a new tallest, right?

According to this website (which was new to me), the Kearns building is 144 ft tall, and the rendering makes it look like the Pantages Tower is about twice that height, so around 288 ft. Wells Fargo is 422 ft, so it would need to be more than 134 feet taller than the old rendering.

So it would need to be about three Kearns buildings tall instead of two

As much as I'd like to see both Kensington and Theater Tower be built to these proposed heights, I still think this is a race between the two, and the built height will be less than the original proposed height. Sorry, but how many times have we heard of tower proposals and then they vanish out of thin air, or we find out that when they actually do get built, they lopped off a few floors, ie. Boyer's tower on State, and now the Brinshore development. Boyer's went from 25 to 21? and Brinshore went from 17 to 13. Brinshore hasn't even started construction yet. It makes me nervous about that one, too.

I wouldn’t worry about that too much. I’d much rather have two at 250 than one at 500. What Salt Lake needs is infill in its park-sized parking lots downtown. I’m in Phoenix now and it’s amazing what 3 or 4 15-20 story buildings can do to downtown vibrancy. I don’t want SLC to look like downtown OKC anyway.

I agree with you Mattedah that nothing makes for a more vibrant downtown than a bunch of 250-foot residential towers. The more the merrier! Though I would like to see those 250 -foot towers as 300-foot towers, of course along with a healthy mix of mid-rises. Seriously, I share Orlando's and many other forumers impatience at this point as far as wanting some sleek 500 footers breaking Salt Lake's glass ceiling. All indicators point to Salt Lake City and its Wasatch Front becoming one of North America's great Metropolises this coming century. I think it's high time that its skyline starts to reflect its upcoming ambitions as one of America's boomtowns. I'm also in the camp of those that have stated that a couple of 500 footers at this point would not throw the skylines balance out of whack. That would be true especially if both Pantages and Kensignton were new tallest in that 500-foot range. Given their chosen locations, that would make for a truly beautiful massing effect of Salt Lake's skyline. Throw in the current towers under construction like 95 S. State and the upcoming towers such as the CCH, and a continued future buildup, Salt Lake's skyline aesthetics are going to start to really get attractive. Add it's unsurpassed backdrop and we would have the makings of one of America's prettiest future skylines.

I also agree as does everyone I think, OKC's Devon at a total of around 844ft. definitely doesn't fit well into OKC's current skyline. It's a beautiful structure but it desperately needs some 500-600ft. company. It sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb, but I don't think a couple of 500 footers in Salt Lake's skyline at this point would have anywhere near the same effect, quite the opposite. IMO, it would be a very attractive enhancement and would encourage the development of more 400-600 foot towers.

There are a few more mature skylines around the West that are quite boring or are a bit of a hot mess. Taken tower for tower I think Salt Lake's design aesthetic is on the right track. There's variety in styles without too much of the same dated 70's vibe. I'm all for having one or two COB's or Key Bank Towers, just not a whole downtown full of them like some of our neighbors such as San Fran. that boomed during those lacking design decades. Another unfortunate example for me is Vancouver with its deluge of cloned by the dozens residential towers. To be fair, San Francisco will eventually camouflage the past with its continued buildup. Austin's current path would be more my desired example. So, bring on a variety of heights and designs for downtown Salt Lake City with some new tallest sprinkled in the mix...Yeeeees!
