Did anyone 20-40 years ago think that a line would reach Vaughan?

I feel the order of things would be:
DRL
SRT replacement
Yonge North extension
Sheppard line east extension
Sheppard line West extension to STC

That should fill up the next 20-50 years.

In order for a subway line to Pickering to be fast enough to be reasonably convenient, it would need to have wide enough stop spacing and high enough top speeds that it would practically be commuter rail anyway (think BART or DC Metrorail). I mean, it's over 19km from the Picking GO station just to Kennedy, the eastern terminus for the BD line subway. By comparison, it's only about 15.5km from Union all the way to Finch, the terminus of the Yonge line. It would only be worth it if you couldn't sufficiently upgrade the LSE line to meet demand.

Vaughan didn't need subway, but just terminating the line at Steeles would have been stupid. Might as build it a few extra km for a complete line.

Same with Hurontario LRT. Hurontario south of QEW and Main St in Brampton do not have the density and ridership to warrant LRT.

But does it really make sense to terminate the line at Steeles? Does it really make sense to cancel the low density and low ridership portion south of QEW? I think it is better to build a complete line to connect to Port Credit and Downtown Brampton and connect to the GO Trains.

So to connect to the Highway 7 corridor and the VIVA and Zum buses and allow for the building of a downtown there make more sense than just terminating at Steeles West.

Likewise, it would have made a lot more sense to prioritize LRT along Eglinton West, the higher ridership portion of the corridor, to connect to the existing Mississauga Transitway and the Airport. If you want to see an example of pure politics, just look at the prioritization of the lower ridership Eglinton East corridor and the lower population and airport-less Scarborough for LRT.

It depends where you work and live. Lets say you work at the STC, then the trip is not bad, and no GO can get you there. It is not just going to Downtown that people ride transit. Why do you think GO i going to a 2WAD system?

The QC Gov. would agree to extend the West branch of the orange line upto the Bois-Francs REM Station.
We should know more on March 10th with the provincial budget.

Awesome! I didn't expected that. I assumed the blue line in the east was the next priority.

The blue line is a done deal, they are working on the architectural plans of the stations.

But it is just places where there is a very high demand for transit that can justify a subway line. Those are almost always going to be routes headed downtown except for in dense urban areas. Do you think there would be high enough ridership between STC and Pickering to warrant a subway connection?

I do think a dense web of express bus routes connecting various suburban locations would be very useful for people going between destinations outside of central areas though.

Nice to see Montreal getting so much done with transit. They are an example to the rest of the country.

Nice to see a government with surpluses investing in the future instead of giving everyone and their uncle tax breaks so they can buy bigger pickups or spend a few days extra down south.

You mean the ones sitting in the bumper to bumper congestion of the 401?

I mean.. QC is also blowing surplus money on big globs of cash to parents. The system there is insanely unfair to single/childless people.. pay the highest tax on the continent and watch as all the money goes to kid programs. At least some of their surplus should be going to broad base income tax cuts to bring their tax rates more in line with the national average.

And this is exactly why I suggested extending Line 4 or 5 (preferably 4 now because it serves North York) to at least Pickering. 401 rush hour traffic in 905 East is no joke and if they hop on the 401, chances are that they don’t go downtown but mid- and north-town.

I'm sure QC has reasons for why they want the QC-specific birthrate to be high.

Great to see the Blue and Orange lines getting extensions in MTL. Is the Pink Line ever happening?

No, I don't.

There's nothing to suggest that any significant percentage of people driving on the highway would be using the subway connection and certainly not near enough to warrant what a subway could handle. The highway carries traffic with many different origin-destination pairs with most of the trips not benefiting from the subway, so even if 100% of those making that specific trip switched to transit (unlikely it would be anywhere near that high) it still is unlikely enough to warrant it. The solution to what you describe would be a dedicated transit lane carrying express buses with the diverse origin-destination pairs of the commuters.

That’s something I can get behind. At least those already exist on the Durham Portion of Highway 2 up to Downtown Oshawa.

The western part of the pink line, an overground LRT, has been approved by the government, being part of the East-end LRT on Notre-Dame.
For the eastern part of the pink line, which is like the DRL in TO, it is currently uncertain, particularly under the CAQ government.

A government that actually cares about families. How terrible.

I wonder how much child care costs in Ontario?
