I have never been to badboy (but have seen many commercials) but they seem to be expanding. What is their niche compared to other furniture stores?

I've never been inside one either, but my assumption has always been that they are essentially the same as Leons\The Brick.

Or they could be two completely different things... I took a look at Maison Corbeil's website and they exist since 1973. Given the name I thought they were related but I am not sure anymore. I would not be surprised if it's about a story of two brothers who both started their own business in a somewhat similar field (for some reason it seems to have happened a lot in Quebec).

Edit: there was indeed something about two brothers competing against each other at some point. The founder of Maison Corbeil is the son of the founder of Corbeil Appliances. The other brother took over Corbeil Applicances and eventually sold it to some company, which in turn eventually sold it to Sears. I don't think there is still a Corbeil in the picture.

Pier 1 closing all of its stores in Canada

TORONTO -- Pier 1 is closing all stores in Canada, according to a statement published Monday on the home décor retailer’s website.

According to the brief statement, Pier 1 is pursuing a sale of the company as the home decor retailer begins Chapter 11 proceedings in the United States.

“In connection with this, the Company has made the decision to move forward in the U.S. and close all stores in Canada. We thank our customers in Canada for your continued loyalty and for shopping with us over the years,” the statement read.

And in a seperate press release, Robert Riesbeck, Pier 1’s CEO and Chief Financial Officer, said “today’s actions are intended to provide Pier 1 with additional time and financial flexibility as we now work to unlock additional value for our stakeholders through a sale of the company.”

“In recent months, we have taken significant steps forward in our business transformation and cost-reduction initiatives,” Riesbeck explained. “We have worked to establish an appropriately sized and profitable store footprint, operating structure and merchandise assortment that will enable Pier 1 to better serve our customers across store and online channels.”

According to the press release, Pier 1 stores and its website will remain open and operating. It also explained that filing for Chapter 11 allows Pier 1 to have authority to “pay wages and benefits and honor customer commitments in the ordinary course of business.”

The statement also noted the bankruptcy filing will help complete Pier 1’s previously announced store closures across North America.

In January, the company announced it was closing up to 450 of its 942 stores in Canada and the U.S. At the time, they said this was “in order to better align its business with the current operating environment."

The home goods retailer has been struggling for years with its stock tumbling from US$300 a share in 2015 to about US$3.56 last Friday.

Pier 1 said it expected the deadline for bidding on the company to be on or around March 23, 2020.

The Bay at St Laurent Shopping Centre and also Gatineau have scaled back their hours. I’m assuming that this is a sign of things to come? If the St Laurent location does indeed close, that makes three empty large spaces that I don’t see them ever filling... Sears, The Bay, Rainbow Cinemas. Man, what’s going on with retail. Sad. Eventually there will be nothing left! The Bayshore and Rideau Centre locations still matches the mall hours. I assume that those two locations will stay.

I saw they were closed early the other night. I was wondering what was going on.

They have reduced hours in a number of places (including Toronto Bloor and West Edmonton Mall). Maybe it is a step to a mass closing, but maybe it is just a cost-saving measure in a soft market.

It's a really big space that I hope we don't lose, but I can't really see The Bay at Promenades Gatineau surviving if the mother ship decides to shed stores. It's never really that busy.

That said I don't fear for the "new" Oxford-run Promenades generally as it's a pretty robust mall that's adapted reasonably well to the changing retail environment. Any time they've had a vacancy they've filled it rather quickly. From what I gather they are able to tap into both the Quebec retail scene given the province we're in (often the only Outaouais store for major Quebec chains in there), plus they draw in lots of Ottawa/ROC/American names that want to dip their toe into the Quebec market.

Just thinking, does The Bay still have a store in Place d'Orléans?

With the exception of Costco (which basically makes its profits off membership fees), many big box retailers are struggling as well. Even Walmart profits haven't shown growth in several years.

I was just thinking that Promenades Gatineau got in when the getting was good when they lured Costco as a large tenant. That space won't likely be empty for a very, very long time.
