What we should do is encourage competition in the airlines then take advantage of the now cheaper tickets by putting a proper carbon tax on all air travel, and use the revenue from that for green transport infrastructure. As usual, good policy is completely simple and obvious, but won't be done.

I do agree, a carbon tax is needed to show the real cost of flying.
