Going to expand the brewery tour we do on Saturdays. Will be hitting up Growler Beer Company at Blatchford and SYC in the west end. heard good things about them. Nice to see we are getting a good mix of Micro brews here now. Both of these are out of the way and if you are not looking you drive right by.

Smokey Bear on Whyte last night.

-Great interior space
-Loved the open kitchen/smells/sounds
-Service was above average
-The menu was unique, difficult to make shared decisions on and clearly a bit off-putting to many in the room
-Prices were on the high side for what you got, but not completely out of range.
-We both liked it, but other than the pork chop (which was amazing), didn't think that we would write home about anything else.

Now that is a great menu - is it fixed price and if so what is the price? I wish they would build tip into the total price and simply say so - it makes it so much easier.

edit: I found it and tip is in the price. $90. In my mind that is tremendous value assuming they pulled off the dishes as respectfully as would most Madrid resto. I will be in Madrid in a few weeks ... and will pay a LOT more for a similar menu offering.

So this past weekend my wife an I decided to continue on our exploration of Edmonton Micro Breweries. Hit 3 this weekend. SYC, Growler Beer Company and Odd Man.

Of the 3 the best was Growler. The space was accessible (and Dog Friendly) the beer was very good. Wife had the Chia Porter and I had a Red Ale. (try to have the same basic beer at each on for comparison).Odd man was good and had some interesting flavor but it just had something missing. Food wise it was the best of the 3. Good selection on the menue.

Growler had a good charcutier board. Syc was not spectacular for flavors, Accessibility and food. I was hoping for more as everyone I talked with said SYC was the best (SYC was the least accessible. Good thing my wife can climb stairs. My home BP is Endeavor and I love their Tumbling Goat.

Best food would be Blind Enthusiasm. then See change and Finally Situation.

Have yet to hit Analog, Omen and Polar Park. After those we should have covered all of Edmonton's Micros and some outlying ones. Like Camrose, Rimbey, Hinton Lacombe and GP.

Do any of Edmonton's breweries allow you to bring in your own food? It's a neat concept I've discovered in Calgary this past summer. The brewery can cut costs of running a kitchen while providing a drinking establishment where you can skip the dish whatever you want. In the summer, I've seen groups rent out the brewery space for a party as well as having a food truck stopped outside.

We did that too in Calgary. Biked around to different breweries and ordered in food. It was awesome.

Most are not equipped for food prep so I believe a lot are allowing you to bring food in. It also allows the establishment to do some more interesting things like allow dogs on the site.

That said I do like the ones that have good food options, as I found this past weekend.

Hit up Town Square for the first time. good location , well equipped. again if you have mobility issues getting upstairs is not an options. But the beer is great and the food options are quite good. So now my standings are ;

1. Blind Enthusiasm.
2. Town Square
3. Situation
4. Sea Change, Both Locations.
5. Endeavor.
6. Growler
7. Odd Man.

then the rest.

Still have to hit Polar Park, Omen and Analog.

Revel Bistro and Bar in the Alberta Hotel is now closed. There is a notice in the doorway.

I know the owner wanted to sell it but it looks like closing was the better option.

He did sell the St Albert restaurant (Privada) and that I believe is open again this week.
