I think the whole reasoning for those steps along the building (by LD) is to keep the sidewalk level with the adjacent building windows, rather than allowing the sidewalk to drop down naturally (on a slope) and the windows to rise out of sight (like the Pacific Centre H&M).

While that's a nice thought - it's really screwy for the pedestrian environment.

I also saw a couple people almost trip on the other sides where stairs randomly appear on the grey concrete. There is no coloured line or anything to warn pedestrians.

I had a close look at that entrance today. Possibly the most awkwardly designed retail entrance I've ever seen. But hey, at least they put out a caution cone now.

Also, look at the last pic and on the left side you'll see a decal on the door indicating that it can be automatically opened for wheelchairs by pushing the button on the right of the door. The entrance is wheelchair friendly!

I can't believe that's built to code. And gven how much the city meddles in design, how did this get past them?

Oh I loved Fresh St Market when I lived in Fleetwood. I wish they'd open one in Kelowna.

That sidewalk is terrible, and that sloped grate to the left. They should probably just put a railing there to remove one tripping hazard and provide a visual cue about the other set of steps. Then they have to do something about accessibility.

EDIT: I didn't see there's still another tripping hazard down farther down. What the hell.

That railing should completely box off the stairs. not just the sides. Otherwise a woman in heels could step down onto the grate, catch her shoe and go for a tumble. Bad design all round.

That's nothing: a few good falls only toughen up your knees and elbows.

At least the tower doesn't exceed the prescribed height limit and flout Viewcone rules, and not brightly lit up like a Jack-o-lantern. That's all that matters!

Excellent, yes!
The stair should be converted to ramp sloping down to the east along the low wall.

... but I'll bet the slope wouldn't be to code(?)

I'm guessing the city had a problem with them sloping the sidewalk along Pacific so they came up with this solution. All the models and renderings had a flush corner out to where the short concrete wall is placed. I wonder if they wanted an overhang for weather protection so they recessed the entrance?
