That was a massive bullet dodged, though you can say Loblaws will still wind up Downtown with their CityMarket location (much better than that proposed big box store!).

It was bad enough having a Staples big box located across the road from the hideous Baccarat. Luckily, Downtown has long moved on from that dark period.

Anyone know how some of that mixed material gets sorted for recycling after being moved off site after a demo like this? Particularly the steel.

well 4 years later, we're back to 3 parking lots at that intersection.
don't lament the baccarat gone but it's a pity that intersection feels so barren. CoE tower has helped a smudge

Bullet dodged for sure.......

Ahhh good ole Staples...a faded memory.

The only faded memory of that whole site that i miss was the roller rink (Roller Drome). Circa late 70s That use to sit on the site of JW.

Wow, I'd forgotten about that. Now I'm going to have to re-forget that terrifying imagery.

My memory seems to be getting a major refresh today. I think I hit that place a few times back in the day!

They will pull the main steel out onsite and put it in bins or load it on trucks.

You should see sorted scrap heaps before it gets taken away is my experience.

It is a pity, that corner is brutal.

I question will it ever fill in...

We're going way off topic, but that dang disco ball used to mess with my spatial reasoning when on roller skates!

Katz Group saying in that CTV story """We're working with our design team to see what transitional use is going to look like for this site, and as everyone knows, ice district phase two is as ambitions a plan as phase one," Shipton said.

He said the plan for phase two calls for a large residential development with up to 4,000 units in 12 towers. The plan will take several years to execute.

"We've got some exciting ideas about how we can activate 104 Street, really bringing in some urban design elements to get people. We need more people experiencing our development," Shipton said.

Until then, the ICE District is on record as saying the site may be used for parking."

Mumble jumble messages from Tim Shipton: (1) as what is on record at the Baccarat site is parking UNTIL phase 2 trophy tower is constructed OR the plan previously presented is changed to ditch the tower and present something else. (2) 104th Street "activation" has nothing to do with Baccarat site - and if its late 2020 before construction commences on the podium (assuming that it IS a podium) on the old Greyhound site not much is going to be happening there until late 2021. As to any tower ... why would that not happen immediately as construction prices now are low, labour force in abundance. Phase 2 .... light years away. That Baccarat site will be nothing more than a temporary tailgate - parking area for a VERY long time.

The greyhound site has been ready to receive the podium/tower since September 2017, we are heading into year 3 of it sitting this way.
Given the tower portion has been delayed, it's safe to say 'phase two' is at least a generation away. I remember news articles bragging about how fast Ice District was being developed compared to LA Live.

My own theory based on nothing: if phase two is ever developed, it won't be by the katz group. I feel like they'd sell all that land after a decade or so of milking parking revenue and move on.

Aren't they still struggling to sell the residential units above Stantec? sigh...

wow, such inane comments. the edmonton inferiority complex is sure showing, like 'here we go, katz wants to abandon us' 'he made his money, got his arena and is done!'

geez. um, last time i checked there market has pretty much stalled. the city has the highest unemployment rate of any major city in the country. why should he or any developer build if no one will buy the product? do you really think he wants three parking lots on 101st??

maybe because if it’s residential they can’t sell them for enough money?

maybe if it’s a hotel there’s not enough demand for a third?

maybe if it’s office they don’t have any new tenants and don’t want to own an empty building. maybe they’re holding on until the city moves out of the space the own in century and chancery...
