Ontario could drop its sale tax and pay its teachers what other provinces pay. Then raise its income taxes to what other provinces have.

In the end each province is different. I’m sure no sales tax does have benefits to Alberta’s economy and consumer spending.

Alberta actually pays its teachers the most while BC is near the bottom.

Not sure if this is a "corruption" zinger or an "Alberta = oil" zinger. If it's the latter, scrapping credits for a booming industry and giving them to a dying industry isn't a particularly smart move.

Probably should mention that Alberta also has a large LNG industry which is arguably booming.

Calling Vancouver a “hub for great talent with potential for continued growth,” Canadian multinational e-commerce company Shopify has announced plans to open its first permanent office in the city, and hire 1,000 employees as part of the process.

“We see a lot of growth happening in Vancouver, but we believe we can offer something different,” said Shopify’s VP of UX, Lynsey Thornton. “I was Shopify’s first employee in Vancouver, and it’s always been clear to me that there’s a huge local talent presence here.”

What’s unique about this announcement, she added, “is that we’re committing to building a top-tier RnD team. This won’t be an office where career growth is limited. It’s our intention to build the best RnD team in the city.”

To do this in Vancouver, Shopify said it is “committed to hiring a world-class, cross-disciplinary team with a focus on software development. We’re looking for backend developers, data engineers, mobile developers, web developers, product designers, and product managers.”

Shopify’s office will be located in Bentall Centre, Tower 4 (1055 Dunsmuir Street), and will feature a custom-designed space “where employees will thrive.” The space is set to open in late 2020, occupying four floors and over 70,000 sq. ft.

Is anyone else getting a little concerned with how many new tech offices are opening here? Where will we get the employees. What are we preparing housing and transportation wise?

I don't, I was pretty happy at the start, but the announcements just keep coming.

Where do we find 10,000+ tech employees by 2022. Unemployments very low already. Are these companies going to just rely on poaching from local companies which may drive them out of business?

I'm all for expansion but there's only so many trained tech workers in the free market at one time. We are going to have a large shortage in the tech sector if things go on.

Are we just going to poach a bunch of workers from Seattle and overseas? If so where will we house them?

Wait I thought Trudeau and Horgan were ruining this province and country? Companies and jobs were fleeing, or about to, according to you. Why must you find reasons to complain about everything?

Maybe some of the brain drain will return. Maybe we pull people from other regions, like Seattle and San Fran do? Maybe they'll even come from Toronto(!)

10,000 people is really nothing for a region our size.

I assume there is always movement but your talking about a pretty specialized field that is growing across Canada so there is no pool of unemployed tech workers somewhere we can move over here.

Plus do we want more people moving in given the housing situation? Especially as downtown is seen as the center of our housing issues while all these businesses are locating themselves downtown. Every renter we kick out of downtown for tech workers will probably move outward into the city of vancouver which pushes other renters out further until people are pushed out of the city. Its like we're operating one of those money push machines and putting coins in, the bottom will get pushed out of the city.

10,000 people is really nothing for a region our size.

Horgan was driving companies from BC. Now a year later tech and a few others are moving here. I didn't mention Horgan for this issue because preparing housing and choosing where to locate businesses is mostly municipal. I am not complaining here, I am bringing up a likely issue.

Yes I am worried about the brain drain and we will definitely pull people. 10,000 is ontop of everything else is a concern, especially given that the workers may be bringing their families with them.

As long as Trump and his ilk of "America-first" republicans remain, immigration sentiment will be favorable for canadian tech environment.

None of the major parties here advocate for the same, so it is likely to continue

If I was a shareholder in these companies, I'd be wondering why they are choosing very expensive jurisdictions to locate their offices.

I also wonder where all these prospective new hires are coming from. Unless they're in the Lower Mainland now, or in San Francisco, they're going to get a nasty shock as to how expensive housing is and how little you get for your money in Vancouver.

The sudden explosion of these jobs seems very much like 1999, or Tech Bubble 2.0
