No wonder I never saw OPP doing that unlike SQ (Quebec provincial police). OPP would always come with a cruiser with lights on.

In Ontario only, you can cross a solid yellow line to pass if the opposing direction is clear. Unlike everywhere else where it's a strict prohibition, in Ontario that line is just a suggestion. The only time it's enforced is if there is a high level of risk, like reduced visibility, a curve or hill, or oncoming traffic.

We are the only place in North America that treats the line this way, so most people just assume you can't ever cross it, which is probably fine, but it creates some misunderstandings at times.

One thing I notice is here in Ontario is our dashed lined sections are a lot shorter than in other jurisdictions.

We are also one of the few places where it is not law to keep right.

Yes, they want to keep us on our toes.

On a number of highways in Northeastern Ontario, quite a few of those sections were shortened by the MTO about 20-25 years ago. It now gives you more confidence when you need to pass.

Gong shows are reported on the 17 near Bissett Creek. I guess the curve squeezed between a cliff and Ottawa River really “does wonders”, uh?

Micheal, "at your request", I redrew the interchange between Highway 11 north and Highway 17. I didn't realize how much houses would need to be taken out on the south side of the bypass until afterward though...

J'ai dessiné cet échangeur de nouveau mais il faudrait acquiérir beaucoup d'immeubles au côté sud des voies de déviation.

I think I'm just going bilingual for the lolz now.

What about burring it all? Not so many houses will need to be demolished.

I was gonna say, "Sure, but you need to show us how to get Highway 11 up Thibeault Hill without making it even steeper", then I realized you wanted Highway 64 to be the new 11.

If we are really gonna stick with the latter, sure why not. In that case, we are better off with a single-point interchange which definitely doesn't eat up any more space than is needed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-point_urban_interchange.

It's so sad. I've seen a news article about the interchanges before but it's now archived for good. Like, I can still identify the location of the interchanges but their exact shapes aren't known.

Edit: I found documents about interchanges at Highway 17 (current) and at Highway 63. Nothing on the one at Highway 11 (current) though.

I take it you don't know the area well. That intersection is higher than the bottom of the hill. So, if you make the thru traffic stay at the top of it. The off ramps can be buried as it could come out at the bottom of the hill and still be good.

As far as north, no, not as far as 64, but a few km west of the city would be better.

I'm a bit lost. You might need to show me drawings. But okay... I didn't know that the bypass at Algonquin Avenue is actually on higher ground (or rather, not on flat ground).

Maybe I just need to visit North Bay a bit more often. Duchênay Falls is nice.

From the south, you climb a hill up to the lights at Algonquin Ave. You then turn right and go down a hill to Airport Rd/McKeown Ave, and then you start climbing. If the change in elevation can be used to a design advantage, it could make things better for travelers and for the local residents.

Move it about a km west of the creek.

On that note, I can see how Highway 17 needs to be realigned around the business area by the falls in the super long term too.

So MTO will need to sit down and have a nice talk with Nipissing 10 after all (even for rerouting 11).

Yes they will, unless they want a mess to get up the escarpment.

Melillo’s First Speech Talks about Twinning

"When there is a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway in my riding, our entire economy shuts down. Our country is literally split into two, and these highway conditions are notoriously dangerous," he said.

"Ontario Liberal leadership candidate Steven Del Duca has announced a northern Ontario platform that includes expanding the Trans-Canada highway to four lanes across its entire length."

He is just sucking up to us so that we might vote them back in, instead of voting NDP.

How long were the liberals in power? How much of the TC did they 4 lane in that time?

I share the same sentiment too.
Keep in mind that there were bigger fish to fry back then though, namely, twinning of 11 between Gravenhurst and North Bay. That took 9 years. Concurrent was the work on Highway 69 which saw Highway 400 extended all the way to Nobel and Highway 69 realigned as a true freeway around Estaire. 64 km of 11-17 was twinned in Thunder Bay - Nipigon corridor (though Nipigon Bridge failure really left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth). Not to be ignored was the work to bring 4 lanes of 17 from Echo Bay to SSM. On the fly, I’m starting to wonder, were the liberals not planning to touch the 17 in NEO at all unless and until it’s obvious that 400 be near Sudbury?

Don’t get me wrong. I dislike the Liberals for ignoring stretches like Kenora and Renfrew and believe that they could have done more in the 6 years after they finished twinning 11 in 2012.
