Probably more like ten minutes to the closer station (Tunney's) and if you're walking to the end of the line to catch LRT you're going backwards from where you're taking the train anyway, meaning you may as well take the extra minutes and walk to Bayview.

According to Google Maps, 8 mins to Tunney's, 9 mins to Bayview.

Ottawa's Skyline is really starting to fill in everywhere now. Used to be only a few groups of tall buildings scattered here and there, outside of the downtown. Now there is infill, and taller builds going up just about everywhere. In some respects, Ottawa is losing some of it's old world charm, but it's finally starting to play catch-up to the other bigger cities in Canada in terms of that big city look and feel.

From that last shot, it doesn't look out of place...that area is going to continue to look different in the next 5 years.

Yeah I strapped myself down onto the top of one of the buses and took camera phone pics that way.

It's the front seat of a double-decker

Taken July 30. Cladding has nearly reached the top on all sides. Will say that the side facing Scott St. is a pretty bland. I would have preferred to see some more colour here, but I will reserve final judgment until it's fully done.

I would take it from Tunneys since it starts there! Although one could argue you could hop on at Bayview to avoid the crowd waiting at Tunneys

You might want to catch it at Tunney's since the train will already be full by the time it gets to Bayview. The equivalent of Hurdman in the east end; if that's your starting point, you're SOL.

Sorry I meant to say take the train at Bayview to head one stop towards Tunneys, and then stay on the train, which will then head back towards Blair (and once again pass Bayview). The idea being that you "beat" the mob waiting to get on / off at Tunneys. This of course would only work if you're not in a rush

'It's like water torture': Carruthers Avenue residents frustrated by two years of construction disruption

Blair Crawford
Updated: January 30, 2020

After more than two years, tensions have reached a breaking point between residents of Carruthers Avenue and construction crews at an 18-storey high rise at the corner of Carruthers and Scott Street.

The one-way Hintonburg avenue is already narrow and in recent years has seen its share of disruption from infill construction. But the constant stream of delivery trucks, and construction equipment at the worksite at 175 Carruthers, coupled with labourers who park their pickup trucks on the street have become too much for residents like Dave Hartell.

“Each of these things on their own is totally manageable, but over time it becomes like water torture,” Hartell said. “You might say, ‘But it’s just a drip of water.’ Yes, but it’s been like this every day for the last two years.

“It was a good relationship initially, but over time it’s just been a long slide down.”

The high rise, the Hintonburg Connection, is being built by the Ottawa firm Morley Hoppner. For much of the past two years, Carruthers was closed off at Scott Street and made two-way, with local traffic being allowed to enter from Ladouceur Street. While that was inconvenient, the traffic problem got even worse when the street was opened up again to through traffic in December, Hartell said.

Icy snowbanks since the Jan. 18 snowstorm have made the situation even worse. Last week, a Culligan delivery truck got stuck, wedged in by snowbanks and a van that had been parked by one of the labourers.

“I felt sorry for the poor delivery guy. He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t want to damage his truck and he didn’t want to damage their truck,” Hartell said.

“My wife had to go to bang on the door of the (worksite) trailer and get the guy off his phone so he could find out whose van it was. We had to have a constable come to direct traffic to get the truck out of there. We shouldn’t have to be doing this when we’re all trying to get to work in the morning.”

The blockage forced another Carruthers resident, Chantal Batt, to cancel a medical appointment.

“He was trapped there for over an hour and I had to go to a doctor’s appointment,” Batt said. “But I couldn’t leave. I had to call and cancel because he was blocking the driveway.”

She worries about what would happen if emergency vehicles need access.

“There’s no way you could get an ambulance or a fire truck through there,” she said.

Residents have taken their complaints to Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper.

“Jeff and his office have been very responsive, but at the same time there’s not a whole lot they can do,” Hartell said. “He keeps saying, ‘You have to call bylaw and report this’.”

Parking on the street is limited to two hours and bylaw officer do come by regularly to ticket illegally parked cars. But that hasn’t solved the problem and has made the worker-resident relationships even testier.

“There’s been an escalation in the last couple of weeks — disputes between residents and the contractors,” Hartell said. “Us getting mad at them. Them getting mad at us for calling 311. Construction workers giving the finger. It’s become this uncomfortable tension.”

Guy Beaudoin, project manager for Morley Hoppner, says he has sympathy for the residents.

“We’ve been here for two years and I can understand that they’re getting impatient. I’m sure they’ll be glad when we’re gone.”

Beaudoin says he’s done his best to keep relations smooth, encouraging workers and subcontractors to be considerate and urging residents to report parking infractions to the city. The narrow, one-way streets in Hintonburg make the site a challenging one, he admits. “If they didn’t park here, they’d just have the same problem two streets over,” he said. Beaudoin’s given his phone number and email to residents and encouraged them to contact him with problems.

Meanwhile, some relief is at hand. City crews cleared the snowbanks on Wednesday and the first occupant of 175 Carruthers moves in on Saturday. Beaudoin says work at the site will soon begin to taper off and should be completely finished by April.
