I remember the surface parking lot along Metcalfe between Queen and Albert shown in the 1966 photo. In those days, there were a lot of surface parking lots in downtown Ottawa. This picture also captures the demolition of the Roxborough Apartments on Elgin Street at Laurier, which was once an elite address.

Back in the 50s and 60s, downtown Ottawa was shelled out to make room for cars. Many historic buildings and elegant old Victorian homes were demolished to create parking for the auto era. It was not a particular good time for downtown and was another reason why retail faded particularly on Sparks Street. Thankfully, most of those surface lots have now been filled in with buildings and as we go forward, hopefully some will have residents to restore clients for Bank and Sparks retail.

Nice find. I knew it was a lake as a historian mentioned that to me a while ago, but it is interesting to learn about some of the backstory.

I'm not sure they had settled on one particular museum. These plans posted on Urbsite show a generic "National Museum". Plenty of images and articles available if you visit the post, including models.

Very interesting routing of the Alexandra replacement on the other side of Nepean Point. One can only hope that the replacement that is now imminent does not look as generic as that model.

What was that bridge on the left side? Interesting... even had a roundabout. There was also a rail crossing nearby

Also, is that Black diagonal line on the right anything? or just an image distortion?

The bridge to the roundabout was where the old CPR crossing was, so part of the plan for the Vanier Parkway more or less. The other small bridges that crosses through the islands are the Minto Bridges, still there today and one of Ottawa's hidden beauties in my opinion.

The other line looks like a serious fold or cut in the photo that has been poorly patched together.

uhhh you guys, you're looking at a diorama, right? So the model was built onto several boards, that's a joint in the board.

Nice throwback photos! So in those two photos, where the traffic lights are, there aren't any traffic lights today correct? The traffic lights would be where the Tim Hortons and McDonalds on Rideau are?

Yes, there are still traffic lights at that spot, but no intersection. The side street is Mosgrove and The Bay built an extension, taking over the street. This occurred at the same time as the Rideau Centre was built in the early 1980s. The traffic lights remain because it is the pedestrian crossing between the main entrance into The Bay and the main entrance into the Rideau Centre. The pedestrian crossing over the street is at this same location.

Those traffic lights were for the intersection with Mosgrove Street. Around the time the Rideau Centre was built, Hudson's Bay (HBC) built the Freiman Mall over Mosgrove Street. This intersection is where we now have skywalk between HBC and the Rideau Centre. A light-controlled cross-walk still exists there today.

Thanks, okay I think I got it. So this is also where the overhead bridge connecting Rideau Centre and The Bay is currently located, right?
