New England and the mid-Atlantic have a more continental climate equivalent to a warmer New Brunswick, while NS, PEI (sort of), and NL are more marine influenced. Cape Cod and Long Island are a bit like Atlantic Canada.
So in NS or NL when a big cold snap happens it's no worse than what might happen in New York City, but the winter heat waves are nowhere near as strong. A winter heat wave that sends Boston to 19 degrees ends up being 9 in Halifax.
Boston gets the gross swampy summer weather that afflicts that whole area. But then again their spring weather is far better than what the Maritimes get.
A lot of Americans don't understand this or where the Maritimes are and think that geographically and climate-wise, Halifax is approximately equivalent to Rimouski. Even in Maine a lot of people think Canada is strictly "north" of them.
