With the high demand for housing, it would not be unreasonable to build a skyscraper. (High rise with at least 40 stories) With some financial backing from a large institution, it could be built and become the first skyscraper in Atlantic Canada.

I don't know how to express my thoughts as well as others but I have mixed feelings about the development going on in the Capital Region. On the one hand, we have a number of projects downtown that are excellent and are really helping turn Charlottetown into more of a world-class city. On the other hand, multiple developers are continuing to ruin the city by building more sprawl. More suburbs, more apartment buildings surrounded by parking lots with zero shopping easily accessible by foot. Build tight, build multi-use, and put the parking underground. Build a grid for transport, and build dense enough so we may have rapid bus service. (And someday BRT or LRT.)
All is looking up downtown, but the sprawl is continuing. I hope some of you are on board with what I'm saying.

(Edit: and it's worse in Stratford, they basiclly just rubber stamp anything over there.)

Tesla Supercharger coming to Charlottetown in 2020.

This means we will not be the last province to get one. Newfoundland does not have one yet, and there are none scheduled for this year.

(But in all seriousness, St. John's should really get one at some point.)

Exactly, it's time we build up! 8-14 stories with underground parking,
Multi-use buildings, business on bottom, then apartments and the top several floors with condos with a view. Views sell and we have a beautiful view of the Charlottetown and South shore region. The view from the Holman Grand hotel is spectacular. Now to give people a view like that; no problem selling them.
I'm rather disappointed the building at Grafton St beside the Pilot House topped at 5 stories. They should have added 5 more floors for condos. Opportunity missed!
The whole idea is to remove sprawl. Get more people living downtown. The apartments shown here recently and in the past are so blah! So counter to providing a uniqueness in their living experience.

Why would they build this and use so much land?! Shrink it to a smaller foot print and take half of it and put it on top of the other half to make it eight stories? It's the City of Charlottetown, not a village.

Agree, all true. Density downtown, tax revenue, people, vibrancy, better for downtown businesses etc. The question is, why don't the developers do it?

The hotel is MOSTLY good. I would prefer the entirety of the parking to be put underground, to have as few parking spots on the waterfront as possible.
Looking very good, I'm sure the people in the condo next door are going to be jealous of the far superior design of this building.

I see the building in the photo is going to be built. The folks that own this building are going to break ground this summer and hope to be done by 2021.

Here is the land this proposal will take up off University Ave. A little much. Also, there is a good swath of trees that will be taken down. Smaller footprint, more green space and may even save some of the trees.

The stacks at Martime Electric haven't toppled yet! They did drive piles under the Delta and that is still there. They have great engineering feets today to counter such things, after all, you don't have to look far, just look at the Confederation bridge.

That’s a myth. I’ve heard it many times over the years, but I’ve never actually seen it referenced in anything official. Engineers can do marvellous things, like build massive bridges such as Confederation Bridge. The problem is city council.

What a large parcel of land, 30 seconds from downtown, to only end up with 24 units. It’s sad, really.

Agree. Especially with the current demand for residential. Something much bigger with ground floor commercial would have been a nice addition on this property.

I can’t sign it, sorry. The city has no right to tell someone what to build on their property, as long as it fits into the zoning plan for the city. The city could make high density more attractive with different incentives, and less BS at the planning office.

This lot in question is 0.48 acres, and is 400 meters away from downtown. If the developer wants to waste prime land by constructing a 24 unit apartment, then so be it. It’s disappointing, for sure, but it would be inappropriate for the city to intervene.
