Loblaw launching online marketplace that will include new brands and products

By: The Canadian Press
Published: Nov 21, 2019 3:31pm EST

Loblaw Companies Ltd. launched a "curated marketplace" online Thursday that will include brands and products the company hasn't stocked before in a move aimed at setting the retailer up to compete with Amazon for Canadian market share.

Canada's largest grocery chain said the marketplace includes more products, as well as a broader range of vendors than what was available before.

"We've curated an assortment of products for our customers, based on the belief they are looking for the increased convenience of buying complementary products from complementary brands while they shop with us," wrote spokeswoman Catherine Thomas in an email.

The online marketplace is an expansion of the existing PC Express platform, which allows customers to buy groceries online and pick them up in store or opt for home delivery.

The expanded offering is available to people shopping at Loblaw's Real Canadian Super Store, Atlantic Super Store and Loblaws chains. Customers will earn PC Optimum points on purchases. The service is not yet available in Quebec.

Robert Carter, an industry adviser with The StratonHunter Group, said the idea is to get consumers to spend more at its online store. That's why the company added big-ticket items, like cribs, into the mix.

Consumers may not be thinking of Loblaw as their go-to when searching for these kinds of products right now, he said.

But the company is thinking for the long-term by tapping into consumer shopping behaviour, said Carter, which trends toward wanting products immediately with as little friction as possible.

By making products beyond groceries available, Loblaw is hoping consumers will consider its online shop over, for example, Amazon, which owns the Whole Foods grocery chain, next time they need to purchase a blanket or other item.

"The opportunity is to expand beyond just that core focus and offer a wide range of products so you're capturing more of that consumer purchase overall."

He deemed the expansion a good move that sets it up to compete with not only Amazon, but also other online retailers like furniture and home decor retailer Wayfair and Walmart.

As of Thursday, the Loblaw platform offered products like blankets, cribs and strollers, Thomas said. The shop will also sell additional items in the toy, home, kitchen and pet categories.

New brands will include Umbra and Lennox Furniture Inc.

The company envisions giving customers the ability to buy products that complement what they've already added to their online carts.

"For example, as new parents prepare for a baby with diapers and formula, they would probably find it very convenient to able to order blankets, wash cloths or even a crib through us," said Hesham Fahmy, vice-president of digital, in a statement.

The new marketplace expands the company's general merchandise offering, which it already sells in store, with complementary goods "that strengthen the core offering and enhance convenience and loyalty," Irene Nattel, an analyst with RBC Dominion Securities Inc., wrote in a note.

RBC doesn't anticipate the marketplace will add a meaningful contribution in the short term, she said, but as the company expands the product assortment and the business matures "the initiative should help drive modest top line and margin growth in time."

I drove past the future Costco location on Ogilvie Road this afternoon, and they have poured the foundations for the warehouse.

Bridgehead coffeehouse chain sold for $9.5M
Ottawa-based business acquired by parent company of Second Cup

CBC News
Posted: Dec 05, 2019 7:00 AM ET | Last Updated: 30 minutes ago

The Ottawa-based Bridgehead coffeehouse chain has been bought by Aegis Brands, the parent company of Second Cup Coffee Co., for $9.5 million.

Bridgehead locations will continue to operate under the Bridgehead name, and its head office will remain in Ottawa, according to a joint statement released Thursday morning.

Last month, Toronto-area Second Cup Coffee Co. changed its corporate name to Aegis Brands as part of a plan to diversify beyond coffee shops.

Aegis will help Bridgehead "expand its footprint without needing to change who they are or what they do best," the statement reads.

Tracey Clark, Bridgehead's current president and CEO, told CBC in an interview the sale has been in the works for the past 18 months.

"I think it's exciting," Clark said. "They're a Canadian company with a long history, and we're a Canadian company with a long history, too."

Clark bought Bridgehead in 1999 and opened its flagship café at 362 Richmond Rd. in Westboro the following year.

"In the very beginning, I always had a goal for Bridgehead that we would be local wherever we were, but that we wanted to be able to expand outside of Ottawa," Clark said.

"It's an appropriate time, and it's an appropriate opportunity. So we're ready."

"I guess the thing that I really like about this is I feel very reassured that we will be able to grow according to our brand values, and that we will be able to operate with autonomy and independence," Clark said.

As part of the deal, Clark will continue to lead the Bridgehead brand as the company's "chief culture officer."

Of the $9.5-million purchase price, Aegis will pay $6 million in cash and the rest in Second Cup shares, according to the statement.

Bridgehead began in 1981, when two United Church ministers and two activists worked to bring fairly traded coffee from Nicaragua to Canada.

According to its website, Bridgehead roasts about 2,700 kilograms of fairly traded organic coffee every week, all done in-house.

I thought there was already a Farm Boy there with an LCBO or is this a 2nd location or an expansion?

This is a new larger store to replace the existing location. It's a block to the north of the existing location.

Two new Ottawa outlets included in Farm Boy's Ontario expansion

Staff Reporter, The Ottawa Citizen
Updated: December 10, 2019

Farm Boy groceries is opening two more Ottawa locations as part of an Ontario-wide expansion.

The company announced the expansion in a news release Tuesday.

The new Ottawa locations will be a 29,000-square-foot outlet at 190 Metcalfe St. and a 38,000-square-foot branch in the Train Yards on Belfast Road. The Train Yards outlet is an expansion and relocation of an existing store in the Train Yards centre.

In the Toronto area, Farm Boy will include locations in Newmarket and in Toronto. The company will also open its first store in St. Catharines.

The expansion will bring the number of Farm Boy stores to 37 in Ontario.

The new stores will range in size from 12,000 to 38,000 square feet. All will feature the core Farm Boy fresh food experience including an extensive selection of farm-fresh foods, chef-inspired takeout meals and popular private label specialty products. As well, the stores will continue to offer a broad selection of locally made, organic, and plant-based foods.

“We’ve come a long way from our first small produce store in Cornwall,” said Farm Boy co-founder and co-chief executive Jean-Louis Bellemare in the release.

“Since Day One, we believed that if we made our customers happy, they would come back.”

Farm Boy was purchased by Empire Co. Ltd., the parent to Sobeys, for about $800 million in 2018.

I'm (pleasantly) surprised that the Centretown one will be so large.

Presumably it's the same square footage as the Sobeys they had there.. Considering they closed the Sobeys in the summer with no intention to reopen as Farm Boy until spring, it's at best one step back, one step forward.

Even though their buildings could be better designed, I'm still proud of them as an Ottawa business.

They are a challenging company to work with. They have a reputation for stiffing their suppliers.

I was walking past the Metro on Rideau near King Edward yesterday, and noticed they had a sign up saying they will be closing the location on January 18.

Yay! That's awesome to hear. That abandoned KFC with the painted over bucket was an eyesore.

Is Burger Priest any good?
