You’re kidding right?

If your going to play ‘poor northerner’ at least do some homework before you post.

Show me one highway in Northern Ontario that has seen their speed limits raised. Isn't 11/17 near Thunder Bay that is divided still at 90 km/hr? I know the 4 lanes by Sault St Marie is still at 90 km/hr.

So, yup, I will play "poor northerner".

Last time I drove up to Sudbury there were a bunch of 100km/h speed limit signs on Highway 69. They weren't there when I drove up that way a decade ago.

Plus, you guys get to legally drive 90km/h on your trunk roads. That isn't true down here.

The divided section of Highway 26 between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach only has a 90km/h limit, despite being fully grade separated and having wildlife fencing.

You guys don't know how good you have it.

That is the future highway 400 if it ever gets finished.

I have driven that section.
It has roundabouts.
Sudbury just build a major bypass north of the city called Maley Drive which is built to similar standards..... 80 km/hr.

Tell me again how good we have it?

Except for highways 11 and 17, the rest are all at 80km/hr.

Micheal tbh I’m a bit tired of the north vs south argument, just as how wave46 was tired of me advocating twinning without good justification. Remember, the twinned section of Sudbury Bypass has the speed limit increased from 90 to 100. Ditto for 69. The crazier one is the 11 which saw the speed limit increased to 100 km/h (from 90 km/h) after twinning, even with 23 at-grade intersections. In Southern Ontario, the speed limit for the like (Highway 3, Highway 6, Highway 40) remains at 80 km/h (not even increased to 90 km/h!!).

Also select sections of Highway 101, entirety of Highway 61, TCH portion of Highway 66, Highway 102 west of T Bay, and all of Highway 655 has 90 km/h limit too.

Yeah you get to go 100 on yours.

No one even follows the speed limits. We should instead be talking geometry.

Highway 11 north of Barrie to the end of the 4 lanes in North Bay is 90 km/hr and 100 km/hr. Where is it 80km/hr?

You may be tired of it, but it is real. It is just like Western Alienation is real. Our governments mainly win due to the cities getting what they want and the rural areas get the scraps.

For a simple example, look at how long it has taken to extend the 407 from Brock Rd to 35/115 vs Highway 69. Let's be honest, there is no extreme need for the 407, whereas twinning 69 is vital if we want a safe highway that can stay open through most weather and accidents.

There are lots more, but after a while, it gets depressing about how much is ignored once you get onto the Canadian Shield.

I have to pay 29.66 cents/km to drive the nearest 400 series highway to me. Do you have to pay tolls for your drive to work?

Also, how many traffic signals do you have to drive through to get to work?

2, 3? I bet it's less than the number that I have to drive through.

Also, how much per month do you pay for parking? I bet it's less than I do.

It has roundabouts at either end. There is nothing deficient about the freeway segment in between the roundabouts.

Sudbury could have sign posted it at whatever speed limit they wanted to. Where I live a bunch of perfectly good rural roads just got their limits reduced from 80 to 60. But I'm not from northern Ontario, so of course I didn't overreact and bitch about it on this forum. (I, instead, wrote my regional government).

The nearest 400 series highway to me is a 2 hour drive away... how far away for you? I know the 407 well. It is not that far from any other 400 series highway.

3 lights, 3 railroad level crossings and 5 stop signs. I also live 75km from work.

My work doesn't have a fee for parking.

The section that is 80km/hr has a full interchange at one end and a roundabout at the other end. So, it could be at a higher rate, but up here, for some reason, it is as though they feel we are not responsible enough for a higher speed.

If there was a law that regardless of feelings, all roads would be posted with a speed limit that is in line with the design speed, I'll bet the governnment(s) would lose it. How dare they raise a speed limit no matter how well it is built.

Many of you likely could give up your car and get to work/school/shopping easily with what ever transit exists. I can't Yes, a city bus comes buy me, but no transit goes that far. There is a bus, but it goes once a day, each way, but I am a shift worker.

I will keep pointing out the inequalities that exist in NEO along the TCH.

I live 80km from work. 15 traffic signals, only one level crossing, and a hadful of stop signs.

I also get the joy of 401 congestion. Each way.

There are no transit alternatives for me to get to work. I'm an office worker, so I get a bit of say when I come and go from the office, but pretty much I get to sit in traffic both ways. It's great fun.

Southern Ontario is a lot more than Toronto. Sure, some people can ride the bus, but most that already choose not to ride the bus, can't. Statements like that prove that northerners are at least as ignorant about southern Ontario as southerners are about the north.

Fun fact.... That section of highway 17 is not part of the TCH network...

I guess swimmer_spe could have written to the City of Sudbury about the speed limits. Otherwise, district government doesn’t exist...

Yes it is.

The TCH logo is practically where the speed limit was reduced on the Ontario Official road map ffs:

My mistake. Highway 17 is the only Ontario provincial highway for it's entire length. I thought the stretch between North Bay and Sudbury wasn't.

Why join the whiners that already have? Seriously, the city has been lowering speed limits throughout the area. places that were 80km/hr are now 70km/hr or even 60km/hr for no reason. Part of the problem seems to be that police will not pull you over till you are doing at least 20 over. So, that 60 km/hr limit area really is still 80km/hr.

I think we just need some technological advancement to make rock-blasting cheaper, like, much cheaper. Otherwise, I’m gonna suggest something that you’ll definitely object to (and probably rightfully so).

I can’t believe that simply one heated debate is about to add 2 more pages to this otherwise dying thread.

I drive highway 17 between North Bay and Sudbury frequently.

Re: the 80km/h limit near North Bay and Sturgeon Falls - it's really a non-issue.

I've (anecdotally) observed that people from Cache Bay don't really have the concept of 'merging' in their minds - more like figuring out that, yes, there is traffic moving at highway speeds and that, yes, they may have to join this flow smoothly when the merge lane runs out. They then proceed to panic and stop in the merge lane until traffic clears.

On the outskirts of North Bay, there's multiple businesses and roads that are in the area, so I could see the issue. I think there's been some collisions there in the past few years, so I could see the justification.

Re: life in Northern Ontario. Relative to the northern rural regions in other provinces, we have it pretty good. You're not finding 4-lane highways up to Prince George, BC or Thompson, MB.

We get all sorts of nice goodies too:
Northern Energy Credit
Northern Travel Grant for healthcare
Half-price vehicle registration,
The 400 to Sudbury *(soonish!) and 11 to North Bay
The dozens of uncrowded small hospitals (excluding the zoos that are Health Sciences North and Thunder Bay Regional Health Centre)
Affordable home prices
Living in one of the lowest-taxed jurisdictions in Canada (Ontario)

Sure, if you live in the backwoods of the Northwest, you can be isolated and have a set of problems that the Province doesn't address well - I understand and empathize with that. It is funny to hear the complaining of the residents of North Bay or wherever acting as if they're spurned by the province, while they get perks the residents of Windsor (farther away from Toronto!) would love to have. Maybe I'm a glass-half full guy, but we have it good up here - we'd do well to appreciate what we have.
