at 100km/hr, the train would still be 30min minimum to Cedar, just south of Nanaimo. It might make more sense to force a transfer to a "coach" like train with washrooms and comfy seats with an overhead power line rather than a third rail. This is starting to get into fantasy land though

There is also the problem of depth.... The Salish Sea is quite deep.

Have the train go onto an self-piloted fast boat and then go across the Salish Sea.

Not sure how feasible that is for Skytrain because of the need for an electrified rail, but a DMU train would work (sans the self piloted boat part).

Not going to happen, but if you have a station in Nanaimo and you can across the water in less than an hour, and you are seamlessly integrated into the Skytrain network, Nanaimo is an option as a Metro Vancouver community.

Or more realistically, have a fast passenger ferry terminally right at a Skytrain station at UBC. Nanaimo to UBC could be done in 50 minutes by boat, then quickly onto the Skytrain network.

Seems like several posters just got whooshed.

On a serious note, maybe there could be an extension to an Iona terminal a decade or two from now?

Or, build a line to one of the 2 current ones.

I think the first step is connecting Victoria to Vancouver with 24 hour ferry service.

With a sailing time of 2 hours, a nap or anything else in the wee hours would not be advantageous. Not only that, but ferries do need regular service, and that cannot be done while underway.

Is Iona the one by the airport? I can totally get behind having a multimodal terminus there. You need to be careful not to upset the environmentalists though. (Once they are, projects are dead.)

Sorry to say, Micheal, but having skytrains cross Burrard Inlet and South Arm currently belongs in the realm of fantasy. Pending on what will become of this mess called Massey Tunnel Replacement, though, we will see if putting skytrain tracks there is feasible.

Genuine question: How does lengthy trip time impact the ability to run 24/7 service?

LoL, don’t you guys find it scary to board a ship in the middle of the night and sail in pitch black open sea?

If a Skytrain connected to the terminals, the area would actually be built for non car users.

I am ex navy, so the ocean at night does not scare me. I am thinking in terms of tired drivers. A 3am sailing may sound good, but if you were the driver, would that be ideal? Besides, except when a storm blows through or a long weekend, running later sailings just does not warrant the cost vs number of passengers.

I mean, it all started with people wanting to have a ferry terminal at the end of the Millenium Line Extension (or straight up an extension to the Island).

It was from the idea that after it gets to UBC it continues West.

There isn't much going on with this line, so some fun can be allowed.

that's why there is a fantasy thread. not everyone wants to constantly read fantasies. hence the thread for it.
