An underground passage could funnel them over to the elevators and the 12th Ave. side underground.
It's actually pretty extensive but probably not designed in any way as a public thoroughfare:

Deep underground stretches a series of corridors linking all corners of the VGH campus from the Diamond Health Care Centre to Heather Pavilion and even the BC Cancer Agency. While many VCH staff never set foot in the VGH tunnel, it’s a vital artery that keeps supplies, equipment and people (including patients) flowing throughout the hospital 24/7 and for over 730 people, it’s where they work day in and day out.

Work is currently underway to transform the tunnel into a more vibrant space, made up of colour-coded stations with updated signage and maps for improved wayfinding. Initiatives include enhancements to lighting, infection control and security as well as painting and decluttering.

The tunnel system is fairly extensive, but it's used by staff for transporting supplies, patients, etc.

You can enter the underground tunnel at Oak (Diamond Centre) and come out on Ash (BC Cancer). The Spinal Centre was mentioned earlier - Blusson Spinal Cord Centre - is not connected to the tunnel (unfortunately).

I agree, I bet the city land will be sold to a developer for less than market value
The city will lease all the office space at above market value and basically pay for the building for the developer. Just as they've done at Crossroads and what they're doing at the other corner of Broadway/Cambie

I suppose this should go here:

City of Vancouver to sell West Broadway laneway to developer for $3.8 million

...“The current lane alignment bisects the development site and the Lane closure and sale is therefore essential to the project,” reads a city staff report.

So in cases like that, does the Ciyty just have a developer over a barrel and can demand whatever rate they want for the absorbtion of a laneway into a development? Or do they have a rate sheet or formula?
That transaction would put the lane up there as one of the highest $/sq. ft. deals in the city, wouldn't it?

In the report

Quote:
The authority for closing and disposing of streets and lanes is set out in Sections 190, 291 and
291A of the Vancouver Charter.
It is Council policy and practice that property assets declared surplus to civic needs are
transferred to the PEF or are sold with the proceeds credited to the PEF.

No, that's actually a bargain. The report says the site is 213.7 square metres. That's 2,300 square feet. At $3,795,000, it's $1,650 per square foot.

Compare that to the 11,700 square foot site at 901 W Broadway sold in 2017 for $22.5 million. That's $1,923 per square foot. 2574 West Broadway is only 6,230 square feet and sold for $13.95 million - $2,239 per square foot.

It's worth noting that this kind of conversion from public to private land can go the other way as well. Less than 10 years ago several lots that had been purchased by the city were converted into a road between 33rd and 34th streets as part of the Clarendon Connector project.

No doubt in this case it was negotiated as part of the deal to put the skytrain station in the new building. What we are seeing now it just the completion of the transaction. Under more normal circumstances there wouldn't be an obligation for the developer to buy the laneway at all, so it would be just like any other land assembly and both sides would be free to negotiate. This project is unique in a lot of ways and I don't think it is indicative of how things generally work.

I'm not trying to troll.... But I have a serious question.

WHEN the Broadway extension reaches UBC, where has it been speculated that they would put the station(s)? To me, I guess it would depend upon the route that it would follow through after Alma street...(?).

The rumour was one station by the bus loop and one in Wesbrook, with an East Mall alignment.

There was talk of demolition and redevelopment of the Wesbrook Building at University Blvd & East Mall.
That's where the line would turn south towards Wesbrook Village.

If UBC pays for the entire portion of the line from Alma... they can put it anywhere they want.

IMO U.B.C. should have a 3rd station near Marine Drive.

I'd save that station for the 41st Line. Wesbrook makes sense in the near future, but Marine doesn't have the potential or actual density to justify another half-billion $$.

Why stop there? Send it over to the Island in a tunnel; probably same price or cheaper than highways and bridges.

Fixed link conundrum solved.
