Odd that Surrey would oppose ridesharing - it's suburban layout makes it difficult to provide good transit service to a lot of residences and I would think that ridesharing would be a great way to address the "last mile" problem.

Would Uber or Lyft be considered a last mile solution? It would add up pretty quickly taking Ubers all the time.

Much of the rideshare delay stem from protectionism, so it makes sense that a town where a lot of taxi drivers live would be opposed.

I read a lot of places with Uber are having scams. It seems an uber driver gets paid when the requester cancels, so drivers are purposely not showing up and eventually the rider cancels and they get paid something regardless.

Quote:
There seems to be a fairly common scam where Uber drivers are essentially more focused on collecting cancelation fees than driving. This can come in one of two forms:

The driver accepting your ride and then just ignoring you, hoping that you’ll eventually cancel the ride
The driver accepting the ride, and then texting with you and asking you to cancel the ride (they could give a variety of reasons for encouraging this)
This is something that happens fairly often, though I guess I don’t fully understand the logic, but I suspect I must be missing something:

You can request to have a cancelation fee refunded; if it is refunded, is the driver still getting the cancelation fee?
If a driver is found to be in a situation where Uber is constantly refunding fees (for good reason), does the platform not take any action?

one of the comments: seems a work around for needing a license

Another trick played is drivers who drive under someone else’s profile. I notice you said this guy had thousands of rides under his belt. But maybe not. That profile could be one used by multiple drivers. It is a way for numerous drivers to avoid registering with Uber, they use a shared profile. It was the hot topic du jour a few when London revoked Uber’s license again. Some of the drivers apparently wouldn’t have been approved; some didn’t even have a valid license. It seemed like this wasn’t just native to London, but the US and other countries too. And the high number of rides serves as a confidence trick working against passengers.

yeah, Uber sucks. nothing new there.

on another note, shouldn't this thread name be changed to raid-hailing? it would be more accurate.

Uber's app is on the phone and knows the location of the car and the profile attached is obviously heavily monitored and logged. I'm sure they are on top of this stuff.

And yes, they are crap (as an organization).

As a side not I'm seeing heavy advertising for Lyft, nothing for Uber (or anybody else).

Surrey’s mayor says ‘large amount’ of residents don’t want ridesharing. Here’s what the numbers say

Quote:
Mayors from Metro Vancouver almost all voted Thursday to fast-track a regional business licence model for ridesharing companies at the TransLink mayor’s council.

All, that is, except for one.

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum was the sole voice of opposition around the table — voting against the motion because many residents of Surrey don’t want ridesharing in the city at all, he said.

“Again, a large amount of our residents in the city of Surrey do not support ridehailing,” McCallum argued.

He said he knows that from speaking with members of the community during his 2018 election campaign.

But two surveys coming out of Surrey in the past year paint a different picture of how people living in the city feel about ridesharing.

...

Huberman said she’s not sure where McCallum got his numbers from.

“He could be getting it from those that he speaks to that voted for him, so he’s staying steadfast and resolute to that perspective,” she said.

“And again, I’m not sure exactly where those responses or those numbers are coming from.”

But Huberman said she wasn’t shocked by McCallum’s comments, because he’s “made it clear that he doesn’t want the ridesharing industry to exist in Surrey.”

McCallum told reporters Thursday he’s listening to concerns from members of the taxi industry.

“And so we have a lot of our residents involved in the taxi industry, and they’re very, very upset at the fact that there isn’t a level playing field in a number of various regulations and so forth,” he said.

McCallum said at the mayors council that operations like Uber and Lyft are not welcome in his community, and he is vowing to stop them.

Global News has requested comment from McCallum on the results of the surveys.

So of the 500000 people that live in Surrey only ones the mayor listens to are the ones that drive cabs. I dont think you can get more fair than the current regulations. The only ones loosing out are the ones that are part of the cartel that owns the cabs. The drivers will make more money driving for uber than the taxi cartel.

Alright I get that a lot of people don't like the way McCallum runs his politics but I am going to play a little devil's advocate here.. he was elected to represent the people of his region and a lot of the residents in Surrey are involved in the Taxi industry and they voted him in so his hands are a little tied on this one.

Keep in mind he was key player in pulling the plug on the Surrey LRT and is pushing for the FULL extension to Langely. Fighting ride-hailing apps might be the compromise he needs to make to appeal to his voters for bringing in Rapid Transit (which taxi workers aren't a fan of. Canada Line anyone?) to his region in a big way. In this ride-hailing fight he can say that he fought to represent his voters the best he could and that they were all just out-voted by everyone else in the region; saving him and his party from losing their votes. That's called democracy and politics.

Before jumping on a hate-train to the cancellation-culture-junction, let's take a look at the bigger picture and the political play that he has to make.

He said the majority of people in Surrey are against ride hailing. Bullshit.

He said a "Surrey police force" will be cheaper than the RCMP. Bullshit.

Honestly I don't care too much what goes on down there, but his Trump/Ford style politics has no place here.

How many taxi industry residents can there be in Surrey? 1,000? even 4,000? That would only be around 1% of the population. Having 1% of the population dictating public policy sounds suspicious to me.

He said that Skytrain to Langley will be better than an LRT system connecting city neighbourhoods. Bullshit.

Seeing the opposite here. Seeing a lot of Advertisement for Lyft on Twitter.

Uber's actually sending out things.

Please note that I wasn't personally sent one, I fetched 4 out of the recycling bin and two of them weren't even for my building, they were for the one next door.

A lot meaning enough to sway the political direction? Statistically that many? Or the ones that whine the most?

I think he's just listening to those that matter. Scrapping the LRT is what the region desired, not just Surrey residents.

Scrapping the RCMP is more of a vanity stunt as they try to Eclipse the city of Vancouver at any means necessary.

Saying Surrey Residents don't want Ridehailing is probably not a lie, as all the Taxi drivers in Metro Vancouver probably live in Surrey, and the Taxi cartel is pretty darn shameless. They know they can break ridehailing by making it impossible to cross Metro Vancouver in one. So if you want to get from Langley to Downtown Vancouver you would have to take a Uber by crossing the Fraser first, and thus everyone goes through Poco to get there.

Until the Skytrain is extended to Langley, the City of Surrey can basically hold the rest of Metro Vancouver hostage. So if you want to take Uber and the licencing regime doesn't allow Uber to operate in Surrey, Uber makes it so that you can not start or end a trip inside Surrey, and thus it prevents people from Langley, again, from being able to get out of Surrey.

However I no doubt believe that this is the same issue popping up again, where the city says one thing, but the population says another because they haven't actually asked the population what they want, they likely just the Surrey city hall crammed with taxi cartel people so that nobody supporting ridehailing could get a word in edgewise.

But then remember that many decisions are influenced by a very vocal minority. Take NIMBYism or the Surrey interurban.
