this is simple modern day land speculation. if you don't like the process don't play the game. you can buy land for it's existing zoning classification.

They are not doing themselves any favors with those mediocre designs though. Propose something interesting like 1 Chicago or Tribune and maybe they might find less opposition.

Those intersections with pavers are actually newly installed as of last year. I believe the paver material itself is recycled. They are part of the Fulton Market Streetscape project. The first phase (Halsted to Morgan) was completed last year. The second phase (Carpenter to Ogden) is supposed to finish this year.

Does anyone know what's going on with the Nobu Hotel? I walk past the site daily and haven't seen anyone on site in several months (except a crew to repair the perimeter fence and the addition of some security cameras). I know they had financing troubles early on, is it possible the money ran out again? Their site lists "early 2020" as an opening date but there seems to be no progress being made towards that goal.

Edit: Well I answered my own question with a little more digging. It seems the developer is suing the builder for fraud: https://www.chicagobusiness.com/commercial-reaAaal-estate/nobu-hotel-developer-sues-builder-fraud. The article says they hired a new builder but presumably it takes a while to restart things.

The previous 808 design was a little weird but at least it had the potential of being interesting. That developer also had a good track record for doing details well

Instead it looks like we are getting an entirely fine but kind of banal faux loft conversion aesthetic. It is like a Fulton Market conversion but there isn't actually a building being converted. Given it's an AMLI development, the 'good materials' hope should probably be tempered

369, the old version of the project which did not advance was 353 W Grand.

That building was torn down a few years ago. It should have preserved.

Oh okay, thanks. Seems pretty unbelievable they'd actually tear that down, being the landmark it is.

If a supertall skyscraper replaces it though I wouldn't be too upset. Did we ever hear any sort of time frame for finding out more information? Sounds potentially exciting.
