Yes, by about 1 lane wide. They’d have to remove all the left- turn lane bays to accommodate everything, something which would slow down traffic significantly. They’d also have to demo the Surrey North Service Canada Centre.

I know the LRT planners promised 104 to be 4 lanes later on when they realized it was a massive sticking point. But whether there’s enough money to bother with bus lanes on 104 and buy the few parcels needed to make it happen is a different story. LRT had a 1.6 Billion dollar budget.

Apparently (Without any funding), the Bridgeview Canal project has been approved.

Wow I cant believe this crazy idea has gotten this far. With the budget shortfalls Surrey has now do tot the rollout of the new police force I guess the plan is to build this by volunteers.

Have weekend work bees. Joking aside this is a very unstable neighborhood with years of soil contamination from industrial use. 20 years ago Surrey was reviving the area by creating new commercial business parks. But have now gone back to creating residential in a flood prone poor soil condition area.

I wait and see what the outcome on this will be

This hasn't gone far - it's not even in the budget - Hundial is right, this is Mayor Magoo just trying to toss something in the air to distract from the non-evidence-based civic police force farce. I give this about as much cred as Linda Heppner's idea for a Ferris wheel. Hope one day Surrey-ites demonstrate an iota of critical thinking when voting and then we don't have to talk about nonsense to distract from real issues.

Interesting that the canal was approved, but in Bridgeview? That is hardly a nice gathering place to commemorate the accolades of a city.

To play devils advocate, it's along the river front, it's closest to anyone coming over the Fraser river, it's near SkyTrain. Potentially build up a cruise ship terminal down the road and turn the waterfront into a modern front!

To be fair it's more of a failure of landscaping than architecture. The architecture is boring, but it's really highlighted by a lack of any hard or soft landscaping.

Would have been great back 20 years ago when the land was looked at for development as a theme park.

How is a cruise ship going to get there? You've got a new tunnel being built which probably won't be deep enough to allow a massive cruise ship, Alex Fraser Bridge, all of the vessels that use that river to move goods, tugboats moving log booms, Patullo Bridge, the rail bridge.

I doubt any company would ever want to navigate that route.

I don't think that would be feasible.

I think the idea is to eventually revitalize Bridgeview - given it is North Surrey's waterfront. A canal could be a great catalyst for that.

Also, the canal kind of needs to be connected to a natural body of water (ie the Fraser River). Doesn't exactly work in the middle of Surrey City Centre uphill.

Lo and behold - there's already a canal in Bridgeview..."Manson Canal" - fed by "Robson Creek".

The location isn't too bad, fairly central to the future redevelopment.
