They could easily replicate those old buildings and get it done faster than the old days - but they choose not to create them.

Well they DID replicate the pediments for the william thomas building, even though they had to go outside of the city to do it - so it does exist.. somewhere..

Also that render was based on the existing architecture of the building that was standing before they demolished it - now that they can't use its original foundations they really have no need to adhere to that design at all - they can literally build anything there - so I await to see their glorious design.

But yes based off what has been demolished in the past, one can understand my extreme hatred of the building they JUST demolished, and my sadness at that whatever they are going to build will never live up to what was originally there.

And it all boils down to cost - they could, but it's expensive and what with the lack of craftsmen to do it it's much easier to throw up a steel and glass building, maybe add in a few deviated angles or lego block jut outs for "edginess" and call it a day.

Seriously it's why I got out of architecture - what they build nowadays is largely depressing and boring. There is a distinct lack of classiness - the only way they achieve it these days is to make things really big and really glassy. Glassy in place of classy.

I've never traveled anywhere to see a boxy glassy building - maybe a round one - or an egg shaped one - but I just hate the lack of imaginativeness - we don't even peak out skyscrapers like they do in new york or montreal. I say if you're going to go futuristic - go full on elsa's ice castle and make it super cool looking

. Don't half-ass it. This is the downtown core - it's supposed to be the showcase of architecture - there is no excuse to build uninspiring buildings in this area.

pretty much the same - if it's super out there it's cool - if its generic legoland and bland then I hate it.

I'm not against modernization - but if you're going to tear down a beautiful building at least replace it with something of equal or greater value aesthetically.

Yesterday after-dark cell phone pictures so not the greatest quality, but an update nonetheless. Good to see this one moving forward. Personally, I'm hoping that the design is the same as the previous render - looks great to my eye, especially if we get quality curtain-wall.

What gets me about this project is we still don't have a clear picture of what it's going to look like - the previous design was based on the existing architecture - are they still going for that look?

I'm not sure. It wouldn't make a difference to this site, though, as it is a commercial project and the province did not exempt those from the construction shut-down.

That's what I've been wondering! The original design was for using the existing structure so the design reflected it - it no longer has to now. I hate not being able to see what something will look like.
