CHICAGO (May 14, 2019) – Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) today announced that more than 20 new hotels are expected to open in Canada by the end of 2022, tripling the global hospitality brand’s presence in the country. The newly announced properties include three hotels in the heart of downtown Niagara Falls, Ontario, expected to open in 2022: a dual-branded Hyatt Centric Niagara Falls and Hyatt Regency Niagara Falls project, with 150 guestrooms and 350 guestrooms, respectively, and the 200-room Hyatt Place Niagara Falls.

This announcement includes properties that will mark the first Hyatt House and Hyatt Centric hotels in Canada and the first Hyatt hotels in the Niagara Falls market, as well as hotels across its other full service and select service brands including Hyatt Regency, Park Hyatt, Andaz and Hyatt Place.

“Hyatt’s brand presence in Canada continues to steadily increase, as we successfully implement our strategy of growing with intent,” said Scott Richer, Hyatt’s regional vice president of development for Canada. “We continue to see growth opportunities in the region and are confident in the direction and future of Hyatt – across all brands.”

With nearly 15 million visitors per year, Niagara Falls, Ontario is considered one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world. Located at the main intersection of Fallsview Avenue and Murray Street in the heart of downtown Niagara Falls, the dual-branded new-build Hyatt Centric and Hyatt Regency project in Niagara Falls will be situated immediately opposite the Fallsview Casino, The Skylon Tower and the 5,000-seat performing arts center that is currently under construction. The properties are owned and will be operated by Fallsview Group, and are slated to open in 2022.

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls will be connected to the Scotiabank Convention Center off Stanley Avenue and proximate to the tourist district of Clifton Hill and numerous family-friendly attractions and entertainment facilities such as the IMAX cinema, the Niagara Wheel and the Fun Zone. Slated to open in 2022, the property is owned and will be operated by Fallsview Group, founded by the Menechella family more than 40 years ago in Niagara Falls.

I still feel this is kind of a weird project and that MIP should stick to its knitting. That said, I like the mixed use aspect so I hope it works out.

There is a scientific (so I've been told) reason for a drinking establishment to be in a place like this. They have found that people who don't know each other get together over a drink will start talking about their projects they are working on, sometime find they have things in common and may come up with a better idea. They may find someone else may have a solution for a problem that they may never have found out about. This is about getting people together that may never run into each other. There are around 1000 people now working at MIP.

That sounds like a reasonable hypothesis. It is very hard to get people, even from the same department, to talk shop so anything's worth a shot. We love our little bubbles...

$35-million McMaster Innovation Park development will be Gowling’s new legal address

Waterloo’s Cora Developments plans construction in spring on ‘innovative ecosystem

The Cora Group plans to begin work in the spring on a $35-million, 90,000-square-foot building in McMaster Innovation Park that will be the new Hamilton home to legal firm Gowling and other tenants.

An "innovative ecosystem" imagined by Gowling was what attracted the Waterloo developer to the project, said Cora COO Adrian Conrad. The design by Neo Architecture is still coming together for what Conrad called "a unique collaborative space."

Louis Frapporti, Hamilton managing partner for Gowling WLG, said the decision to move operations from their existing downtown location in a historic Bank of Montreal to the McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) was sparked by the firm's "accelerated development around innovation" and follows "an astonishing amount of growth as a result of our commitment to this region."

Part of the growth came last January when Gowling merged with Hamilton law firm Evans Sweeny Bordin LLP.

About 200 people — 52 lawyers and more than 150 staff — from the Evans Sweeny Bordin office in the CIBC tower, as well as the Gowling offices at Main and James, will move into the new MIP space.

"The move isn't simply motivated because the space is different, better or nicer — it is very much about animating and moving forward the partnership we have with McMaster and Mohawk to assist them with the commercialization of technology," Frapporti said.

MIP offices will take up a large portion of the remaining space.

Frapporti understands the skeptical first response they got when they suggested the idea of a legal firm in the midst of a vibrant and creative centre.

"Lawyers historically have been quite reactive," Frapporti said. "But we want to position ourselves as actively partnering not just with our clients but with our community — where people live, work and create, and where researchers, engineers, young people and business congregate.

"Some of the most significant business decisions do not arrive out of a boardroom, they arrive over dinner at the bar after the boardroom."

Through offices in 19 cities across the world, Gowling represents clients in sectors that Frapporti said align with Hamilton's own growth sectors — advanced manufacturing, life sciences and automotive.

"The magic sauce that we bring to all that is that we connect to well over 100,000 clients in virtually every country in the world," Frapporti said, adding that MIP is where the building blocks will fall into place.

Hamilton’s Forge and Innovation Factory: Business incubators stronger together

New space opened at McMaster Innovation Park just the start of growing hub

Enterprises that started or cycled through McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) as part of their business growth have raised $350 million over the past nine years.

That's the total ripple effect of investments made in the hundreds of young startups that got their footing at two business incubators working together at the MIP. The Innovation Factory is Hamilton's regional innovation centre that has assisted 1,900 local startups since opening in 2011. The Forge is McMaster's business support centre that has graduated 130 companies since 2015.

David Carter, director of the Innovation Factory, circled that $350-million number at the official opening on Wednesday of a new 10,000-square-foot space in a former MIP garage built to expand space for entrepreneurs — and the many volunteer mentors who guide them.

Young entrepreneurs — quick on the draw with business cards — milled about the sunlit lower-level space of the MIP's main building on Longwood Road South, as Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas MP Filomena Tassi reflected on the moment she first dropped into the garage space last December to present a $1.2-million cheque to launch construction of the $2.4-million space.

Paul Mercante, co-founder of GeneBlueprint, is an example of just one of many Forge entrepreneurs benefiting from the office space and coaching provided.

The five staff at the year-old company are at the commercial stage of a $450 kit that analyzes DNA of fitness club members seeking a custom nutrition and exercise plan based on a genetic evaluation.

Mitch Wilson, another entrepreneur, is marketing surgery equipment through his Mariner Endosurgery startup.

At a much further stage of development is former Forge and Innovation Factory startup-turned-superstar Nix Sensor, which has raised $9 million with a colour-matching device growing in popularity in decor and design.

Startups have been a big part of the history of the MIP building, which in its previous life as a Westinghouse factory served as the launching pad for an early-stage Wescam to toil away with a "Westinghouse Camera" concept.

But in the wider vision for the land holdings at Longwood and Aberdeen Avenue, startups will occupy just 10 per cent of the total 2.1 million square feet, according to Ty Shattuck, MIP chief executive officer.

"That still translates to over 200,000 square feet of space for startups," he said, adding that the rest of the space provides working capital and a critical mass of people to add to the "general vibe" of a place that "encourages collisions" between creators and companies.

On a tour around the 50-acre property — of which only 700,000 square feet is currently developed — Shattuck provides a glimpse of what's to come.

A deal is pending for Cora Developments to develop between 80,000 and 100,000 square feet of new office space with anchor tenant Gowlings.

A four-floor Hyatt hotel is going up across the street to provide extended stay suites for the churn of people developing projects at MIP.

The corner of Longwood and Aberdeen is reserved for a life sciences centre.

And last March, MIP purchased two century-old warehouse spaces that Shattuck said will be built out in a vision similar to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, only twice as big.

He won't disclose what MIP paid for the 88,000-square-foot and 150,000-square-foot buildings, but said "they're already appreciated beyond that in value."

"There's more demand than I ever imagined, particularly from life sciences companies," Shattuck said of the number of discussions underway among groups seeking to locate in the park.

A preliminary sketch of a master plan that is awaiting approval illustrates the warehouses' proximity to a Metrolinx maintenance yard that will be built for Hamilton's LRT system.

And the park's adjacency to Highway 403 provides a visibility that Shattuck hopes translates to a sponsor willing to step up and sign on for naming rights.
