I hope they walk back from the cost cutting of features they have taken. Put back in the restaurant, put up the fin lighting, build a Tower B of appropriate architectural quality to compliment the rest of the district.
Finish your vision and deliver something exceptional instead of 80% of it.

Not sure where else to put this.

Looks like downtown Edmonton is also feeling the economic pinch with the failure of the premier luxury condo tower in the ICE District.

Stantec Tower condos to be turned into hotel instead

EDMONTON -- Floors of luxury homes in Edmonton's ICE District will instead become a hotel after the condominiums sold poorly, officials say.

SKY Residences was supposed to occupy floors 30 through 66 in Stantec Tower.

Officials confirmed to CTV News Edmonton on Thursday the bottom 12 floors will be converted into a new hotel.

"You have to be flexible to market demands. You have to be flexible to what your customers and your market is saying," said Tim Shipton of ICE District Joint Venture.

Shipton said the group would be looking for a premium hotel brand, but that there was no deal in place yet.

Not really, the 'luxury condo' was the Legends which sold out in the middle of recession. That being said condo sales across the board have been slow over the past few years. This move makes absolute sense and it would be something I would do if I was developing this property.

Promenade + Gondola + Power plant + pump house x 2 rest/bar/cafe + programming = something uniquely Edmonton, special and our new gathering place.

I'm in favour of this, Edmonton needs to generate a new economy of tourism beyond WEM.

Downtown, gondola, promenade, gondola across the river, whyte ave

That day trip would be a draw in itself to come check out Edmonton as a tourist. I'd put that up there with WEM as definite things to do in Edmonton as a visitor. In my head, everything coming together around Rossdale seems too good to be true, that I have to remind myself to temper expectations.

Not surprised. The project was very ambitious and in my opinion over designed. They should re-circle the wagons and come back with something that they can execute.

^bingo.

To be honest, this was a project that had 'failure to launch' because of the cost escalation, scope escalation and some high costs 'wants'.

Perhaps we can retain/preserve that building and its mural now.
