I'd love to see it. I hope they record the installation and then post some video. Even better would be a live stream.

I happened to drive by there on Sunday going south bound and noticed they had built something down below but could only see a part of it. What I saw looked like a pedestrian bridge but I could be totally wrong.

This must be a first!

New southwest ring road connections done, but you can't use them yet

The city has completed two key road extensions for the southwest ring road.

However, until the ring road opens in 2021, these are effectively roads to nowhere.

On the bright side, at least the two roads can't be blamed for slowing down the ring road project.

The city agreed to extend 90th Avenue S.W. to meet up with the ring road and to link Southland Drive with 90th Avenue.

While the city did the work, the provincial government paid the $18.4 million cost of the extensions.

Construction can be unpredictable

The city's project manager for the two connections, Vina Hendra, said the work was done to ensure the roads are ready when the province cuts the ribbon on the southwest ring road.

She said there's no harm in being done early.

"Construction is always unpredictable," said Hendra.

"We want to make sure that anything that we encounter that's unexpected doesn't become an issue, it doesn't become a potential delay for when the ring road is ready to be opened."

By completing these roads early before the ring road project is ready, the city was able to take advantage of lower construction costs.

As for why the roads are completely ready for traffic that won't arrive for two years, she said it just minimizes any work later.
No driving yet

There are no plans to let the public drive on the roads and they are also remaining closed for pedestrians and cyclists. Nearby pathways which were rerouted to go under both 90th Avenue and Southland Drive opened earlier this fall.

"If you drive by the roads, you'll see that we've put barricades to make sure that there's nowhere to go right now," said Hendra.

The city portions of the two roads will also not be available for use by construction crews for the ring road project.

This map, provided by the city, illustrates the 90th Avenue and Southland Drive extensions. Black roads illustrate the provincial portions, while city roads lead up to the black portions of both 90th Avenue and Southland Drive.

Once outside of the city's boundaries, both sides of Southland and 90th Avenue are expected to be lined by businesses by the Tsuut'ina Nation.

No huge concerns: Farkas

The city councillor for the area said completing the roads so early is a bit unusual but doesn't raise any concerns for him.

"It's a bit weird to build a road to nowhere, but given the facts here, I don't think it's an issue," said Coun. Jeromy Farkas.

He said given how much road construction has been going on in the southwest part of his ward, he's glad this project is done.

"There won't need to be any more work here next year, which will be a nice reprieve for the residents. And since no maintenance is required, I don't see any real downside."

Although the roads are not open for any purpose, Farkas said he is working with the local community association that is interested in having a bike parade on the roads next spring.

I’m not sure what the point of this story was/is? The two roads connect to nothing right now. The major road that wasn’t discussed was Anderson. It has been completely rebuilt and expanded to 3 lanes each way from Elbow to 37st (future connection to the ring road). Basically the city has done its part. Waiting for the province to finish theirs. Must have been a slow news day

Glenmore also, the city’s work there is essentially complete. Looks like next year they will widen Sarcee to 3 lanes just north of the ring road also, as the interchange plans for Sarcee/Richmond Road have been shelved.

The City's section of the Glenmore upgrade doesn't look complete to me. Not building the Sarcee/Richmond interchange now is going to result in a lot of headaches in the area.

What's left to do? All the new lanes are open up to the SWCRR boundary. The city's responsibility ends just west of Richard Road. Past that, 37th and further west, is SWCRR.

I drove the entire stretch on Sunday and they were doing a ton of work on the city section. A lot does look done but the City still has the crazy low 50 km/h speed limits in place. The province on the other hand has a speed limit of 60 even though there's way more complicated work going on.

I drove it yesterday and I stand by my observation that it is essentially complete.

Yeah, it makes absolutely no sense why Glenmore is still 50 km/h in the City portion given that construction is substantially complete and no one in their right mind would drive it at that speed.

I wonder if the City shelved the Sarcee/Richmond Road interchange now that the West RR is going ahead ?

For the record:
I drove Glenmore westbound from Crowchild yesterday around 4:30 and the right hand lane was closed - they seemed to still be doing work to me.

The Sarcee/Richmond Road interchange is definitely not shelved. They know they need it even with the West leg going ahead. It's strictly a matter of money. An interchange has been needed there for about the last 20 years and starting in 2021 it's going to be a total disaster.

Concerning Glenmore, just directly west of Crowchild what are they doing? The area was all dug up on the weekend and there was equipment working. Going EB are they not going to add another lane under Crowchild or is that too complicated for the City?

I QUOTE: "The Sarcee Trail / Richmond Road S.W. interchange is not funded in the next 2019-2022 budget cycle. The City will continue to monitor the Sarcee Trail and Richmond Road intersection once the Southwest Calgary Ring Road and the West Calgary Ring Road are open for traffic. The interchange project will be reviewed as a potential candidate as part of the next budget cycle in 2023-2026."

You're right, it's about money. There is none now, so it's indefinitely postponed. That's why I said "shelved", I did not say "abandoned". I stand by my word choice, it's a shame you want to bicker over these things.

And sadly some things are funded but not very well planned.

I drove Westbound from Crowchild yesterday around 11:30 AM and the right lane was closed after Richard Road, which is where the Ring Road project takes over. Where was the lane closed for you?

The City's part of the project continues on well past Richard Road.

Yes, but all the merging and shifting is to line up with the current ring road detour. The speed limit can be lowered to 60 km/h at that point. No need to hold it at 50 km/h between Richard Road and Crowchild.

I agree! I fear that the greedy City will keep it at 50 until 2022 if not later.

New photo set up on SWCRR site, look to be from early-mid October. Definitely a new group doing these photos. They look to be from a drone, and the photo set is smaller.

Edit: No photos of the Southland, 130th, Fish Creek Blvd, 22x, James Mckevitt, 6St, or Macleod interchanges.

Sarcee/Glenmore Interchange Complex looking north. Too bad they couldn't have got more of it in the shot.
