If we can manage this asset better and have more attractive events on site, I am all for it. After all the money put into moving and rebuilding the Horticultural building as event space, why was no air conditioning installed? Was this a foolish cost saving measure?

There shouldn't even be any debate about this. The City is terrible at everything it does (OC Transpo, LRT, bike lanes, road maintenance, bridges, the stupid fountain at Lansdowne that isn't a fountain and that no one is allowed to play in, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.)

OSEG isn't asking for ownership of the Lansdowne assets, just control over programming. Let them have it already.

The city has barely done any programming with the space. Or at least anything interesting. I've long thought the city should start outsourcing public space programming.

I do think part of the deal, however, should be that the city has the right to a certain number of days of free programming in the space, so that the city can still use the space for those rare times when it actually does want to use it.

Agreed. Municipal control over programming is not typically a recipe for a dynamic area, but there should be some pretty strict parameters around public uses (and free use).

Luloff tables a motion he worked on with both the Mayor and Menard. It slows down the proposal from a negotiations (basically a done deal) to exploratory discussions and clarifies conditions the City would impose on OSEG to protect the public good. This seems far superior and much more transparent than the behind closed doors negotiations the Mayor, Kanellakos and OSEG were having. Report would come back June 2020.

I agree with you, to a certain extent. The keywords being inexpensive and quick.

Let's go through some options in the Lansdowne area:

Whole Foods: Gourmet food but at a gourmet price i.e. fairly expensive for what you get.

Joey's: Not quick enough. Also a bit pricier.

Local: Not quick enough.

Jack Astors: Not quick enough.

Craft Beer: Not quick enough.

Sen Asian Cuisine: Not quick enough.

Industria Brasserie: Not quick enough.

Kettleman Bagel: This is quick and inexpensive. So this gets a passing grade!

By "not quick enough" I mean showing up to Lansdowne and getting a quick bite (half an hour or less) before a movie at the cinema.

I'd love to see a Chipotle open there.

When I was drafting up my response, I was trying to think of all the available options in the Lansdowne area. I had thought of South St. Burger, but then recalled they're no longer in business there.

Chipotle would definitely be a good option. It would be fairly quick and inexpensive for what you get. I've had the burrito from Whole Food and it just felt underwhelming when compared to Chipotle

There had been a Quesada burrito place at Lansdowne when the redeveloped property re-opened. It only lasted about a year iirc.

There is also Subway, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Pizza Pizza, Mad Radish, and Yummy Pies, all along Bank St. between Landsdowne and Fifth.

I think that is the issue. For those places to be successful, they need to be out on Bank in the higher traffic areas. Unfortunately Lansdowne decided to fill the smaller spots on Bank with a bank and a pet store.

South Street Burger was a $15-20 hamburger with a fast-food ambiance. Simply crazyness.

I always thought South Street Burger was just "okay" i.e. I was often underwhelmed, especially given how much it cost

Those are fair options, albeit just a tiny bit further away. That said, when I have a bit more time before a movie, I'll normally venture off to Anthony's for their pizza, which is even further away

Not sure where you are getting that price range from. Burgers were around $6 or 7 and combos were around $10.

Plus it was licensed. The best place to grab a beer before a hockey or football game.
