First of all, not everyone has a smartphone, not to mention maybe your traveling, forgot your phone, low battery, don’t use transit often so don’t know how or want to bother downloading any specific app, etc...
I have a smart phone, yet believe it or not such displays are still very helpful especially when riding an unfamiliar transit system.
With that attitude why have any way finding? Just remove all maps and voice announcement from the entire system. You have a smartphone don’t you? Figure it out!
Also such displays show more than just basic line maps. They also show station layouts and guide transfer connections on the systems I have been on.
