Today marks the 18th anniversary of the provincial historic designation of the Rossdale Power Plant. A new lighting installation that highlights the architecture and history of the structure and the start of the River Crossing area’s revitalization will be illuminated tonight at 7:03 p.m.

The power plant will be lit by 35 light stands in its mezzanine floor windows and 28 lights on the smoke stacks.

“It’s wonderful to use lighting to highlight the beauty of this historic industrial structure,” said Erik Backstrom, Senior Planner, Planning Initiatives. “The Rossdale Power Plant is a landmark in Edmonton’s River Valley. It powered Edmonton’s economic development for decades, and will be a key spark to bring new life to the area through the River Crossing initiative.”

The project cost $200,000, with $180,000 coming from a $3.2 million power plant stabilization project, and $20,000 funded by a grant from the City’s Lighting Heritage Buildings Pilot Program, an initiative of Edmonton's WinterCity Strategy. The lights were installed by EPCOR.

“The river crossing has been a gathering place for 10,000 years,” said Geoff Wagner, Senior Manager, Project Development. “The new, decorative lighting system continues this celebration of our past, and creates excitement for what the building and the site can become in the future.”

The power plant was built in phases between the 1930s and the 1950s and decommissioned between 2011-2012. On October 17, 2001, as a result of the efforts of organizations such the Rossdale Community League and ConCerv, a group that advocated for the preservation of the plant, three buildings at the Rossdale Power Plant were designated as Provincial Historic Resources, protecting them for future generations.

The plant is widely recognized as an important part of our city’s history. The City of Edmonton envisions the River Crossing area becoming a significant destination for Edmontonians and visitors, and an attractive community for thousands of residents.

Proposed rezoning for transit-oriented development in
West Jasper Place
October 23, 2019

Link to application:
https://www.edmonton.ca/residential_neig...-jasper-place-planning-applications.aspx

Edmontonians are invited to a drop-in engagement session to learn more about a proposed rezoning at 14915 Stony Plain Road.

Date: Tuesday, October 29
Time: 6 – 8 p.m. (drop-in, no formal presentation)
Location: West End Christian Reformed Church, 10015 149 Street NW

The proposed rezoning from Low Intensity Business Zone (CB1) to a Site Specific Development Control Provision (DC2) would allow for the construction of a transit-oriented development adjacent to a future LRT station. The development would include up to 1,000 residential units in a mix of high-rise and low-rise apartment buildings with commercial uses at street level.

The engagement session will be an opportunity to learn more about the proposal and share your views with the City and the applicant. Feedback will be summarized in a report to City Council for a decision at a future Public Hearing.

---

A planning application has been received for a rezoning and plan amendment for a site at 14915 Stony Plain Road NW.

The application proposes to rezone the site from Low Intensity Business Zone (CB1) to Site Specific Development Control Provision (DC2). The proposed Site Specific Development Control Provision (DC2) zoning would allow for development of a mixed-use, high-density Transit-Oriented Development.

The proposal includes:

A wide range of commercial uses, up to 15,000 sq. m (162,000 sq. ft), similar to the current commercial use of the site
Up to 1,000 residential units in a mix of high and medium-rise buildings, as well as row housing
Floor Area Ratio of 2.5 (increased from 2.0 currently)
Opportunities for mixed use buildings up to 30 metres (approximately 10 storeys) in height
Opportunities for residential towers up to 90 metres in height (approximately 30 storeys) on the north side of the site
establishing internal roads through the site
An associated application has been made to amend the Jasper Place Area Redevelopment Plan to facilitate the rezoning. This would allow for the increased height in proximity to the planned LRT stop on the Valley Line West LRT expansion.

This rezoning will follow a modified process developed between City Planning and the Applicant (Stantec, on behalf of RioCan REIT). Pre-application consultation, including a public open house, was conducted by the applicant in November 2018.

The Heights - Grandin

Source:
https://edmonton.skyrisecities.com/news/...strichs-43-storey-tower-proposal-heights

On November 4, City Council will debate the merits of Westrich Pacific and Arc Studio's proposal to erect a 43-storey, 130-metre, residential high-rise upon the NE corner of 111 St NW and 100 Ave NW in Oliver. Known as "The Heights," the mixed-use development would feature up to 370 residential units perched atop a single row of multi-storey townhouses, with space leftover for street-level retail.

Westrich must have a really strong investor base to keep putting up Condominiums. Pretty surprised how quick the View got going.

Wonder how Langham is doing.

youth mental health facility at RAH is differed.

Try to get more detail but a friend at Alberta Infrastructure said there will be more.

Interesting, they are putting money into trades training but there will be few jobs to train on.

Has the UCP put forward anything original so far? It seems like they are just copying and pasting policies from the past.

Agree 100%

But it's more than the UPC.... which of course is a catalyst to this happening.
Its Alberta's populous and common Business sense that lead the way.

Wexit....Nov 2....Sandman inn...Stony Plain road.

Any updates on the former Enbridge Tower/Hyatt conversion? If memory serves, construction was slated to begin this month?
