Too bad it doesn't have a more robust podium. Pretty dinky looking

Those renderings that these architects and developers use sometimes tend to amuse me to no end.

The one with the couple standing in the balcony for example, seems to indicate the tower (which fronts Kingsway) is actually located south of Beresford if you go by that backplate image they used which shows the SKytrain line and what seems to be either Silver or Metroplace while they were still under construction.

I'm not sure why they would insist on having the skytrain line be visible in the image from that angle when fact of the matter is that you likely won't see the skytrain line from almost any angle (or from most angles) in the tower given where it's actually located.

So so funny.

As jollyburger pointed out the podium is only about a 1/3 of the way built.

It's interesting how the podium has different colour spandrel on its two sides.

The darker glazing facing into the complex looks like office space while the glazing facing out looks like residential space.

Still not much news on what retail is going in. The siteplan pdf still shows all the retail in these phases as available. Along restaurant row it shows it all as leased and says Dolar Shop (a premium hot pot place) in the space between Earls and Cactus Club.

That site plan makes it look like the Site 5 & 6 retail units are strata units (?) due to their small size, though I suppose they could combine units.

Whenever I walk along McKay Avenue, I am always somewhat surprised that the podium between Tower 4 and 5 is not continuous and will have a rather huge open area for parkade drive-ins and moving trucks. It will be interesting to see how it will feel like from Silver Drive side, once opened up.

Talking about Silver Drive, that street is getting very busy with a constant stream of cars. That doesn't make it very pleasing for the patios along the restaurant row.

Also, it is stupid that they built street parking alongside Silver Drive. This street should be mostly pedestrian realm, yet the pedestrian space is less than 2 meters wide in few places. It feels very poorly planned overall.

Ideally all car traffic to tower parkades would be from Station Street, behind the towers.

I wish we had more lighting like this in the city instead of just the standard street light pole.

Agreed. I do not understand what giving cars access to Silver accomplishes. There is a regular traffic jam on the Kingsborough and Silver corner and this is with half of the development complete.

If Burnaby is planning to make downtown out of Metrotown they should be more progressive then just restoring the street grid. They should make it into street greed with no access to cars. Otherwise this is utterly pointless - you will end up with a open mall concept that is jammed with cars looking for parking.

I remember in one of the articles that they are planning an underground network of streets below the surface streets for thru traffic and freight/truck traffic once they build out the new downtown(Metrotown). I think once you remove all the trucks and thru traffic, this will help with some congestion.

WeWork launches 1st Burnaby location amid financial woes

WeWork opened its 56,000-sq.-ft. communal office space in Station Square shortly after reports from U.S. media that the company lost more than US$1 billion in three months

Local politicians, members of the business community and WeWork officials are pictured by attendees cutting a ribbon at the grand opening of the company’s first Burnaby location.

Quote:
So why is the company moving ahead with two new locations in Burnaby? In a statement to the NOW, Stephen Tapp, WeWork general manager for Canada, said the company is “focused on smart, strategic growth across Metro Vancouver.”

“This continues to be a very strong market for us with a thriving core business, incredible demand and great assets,” Tapp said in an email statement. “Here on the front lines, the things all of us woke up to each morning three months ago are the same now and every day moving forward: creating an exceptional experience and beautiful spaces for our members.”
Quote:
Burnaby Board of Trade president Paul Holden said, “When you get a global brand, such as WeWork, choosing Burnaby to be one of its major homes here in the Lower Mainland, I think it speaks to the quality of the business community and the potential that we have here in Burnaby.”

It’s not just WeWork that has faced challenges – Cmpny, a local startup offering co-working space, recently told its customers it would be closing its Burnaby location on Jan. 31, 2020 and its Coquitlam location on Mar. 31, 2020. The reason for the closures is not clear at this point.

But while WeWork has liabilities – mounting pressure from investors to become profitable – Mayor Mike Hurley said it also has advantages over Cmpny.

“It wasn’t as connected to other spaces the same. You can be connected to other spaces anywhere in North America with this,” Hurley said.
