Yea at first I thought this was either a thing out of convenience or something political. (^ Things that I learned from online forums in general)

What about the GTA West though? Why not all the way to Guelph? That’ll take pressure off the 401. At least do something with Highway 7 in the meantime before RER Kitchener comes into full force.
There was public opposition to building a road between Guelph and Brampton, so the government of the day caved and shelved it.

I'm not sure it will be dead forever, but right now a ten lane 401 will handle the traffic increases for another few decades.

https://globalnews.ca/news/5980660/407-extension-to-clarington-on-track-2020/

My fantasy proposal -
Once 407E and 418 are completed, MTO should consider dropping tolls on the 412, extend it as Brooklynn Bypass, and link it on Highway 12, which should be widened until Beaverton. With congestion on 401 east of the toll road, the tolls are becoming useless. More importantly, people living in Whitby want it gone anyway.

When traffic warrants, MTO should also convert the RIRO section of 35/115 into a full freeway.

At least I see some political points to score because it’s 905 (east). Highway 11 between Crown Hill (Barrie) and Gravenhurst? Not so much political will there.

Then we will have a true GTA bypass from Highway 401 Exit 330B to Exit (or should I say entrance?) 435 (though a costly one).

Ps: Holy smokes that’s 105 km right there. That’s some serious bypass.

Edit: https://www.durhamradionews.com/archives/121595

Toll removal’s actually in the realm of fantasy.

Is it really necessary to widen 12 to Beaverton? I don't drive the whole stretch regularly, but it hasn't seemed overly congested.

Hwy 12 is busy through Beaverton. There is a lot of heavy truck traffic as well. Coming back south on a long weekend it’s not rare for Hwy 12 to be stop and go southerly from north of Hwy 169 all the way south to the traffic signals at Regional Road 15.

12 is over capacity between 48 and 169 right now. South of 48 I would more so describe it as busy, but not over capacity. Lake Ridge road provides a lot of additional north-south capacity for the southern part of the highway.

Beyond rerouting 12 on Thickson through Brooklin, nothing really needs to happen to the southern part of 12 if you ask me. It definitely needs a widening between 48 and 169 though, with some sort of bypass around Brechin.

So having 404 loop around the east side of Lake Simcoe isn’t a talk of fantasy, after all.

(Personally I kinda wanna see the freeway to go Lindsay then Peterborough though, but that’s just me.)

The southern portion of Hwy 12 is busy enough as well. At 8am in the morning, a southbound vehicle approaching the traffic signal at Myrtle Road might actually get through the light on the first cycle. By 8:30 that’s no longer true though.

I think the traffic signal timing has recently been adjusted to favour east-west traffic on Myrtle Road a little bit more than it used to. Doesn’t seem that long ago to think of a time when this intersection was still stop controlled

Then soon, time for a roundabout like Highway 48

A recent photo of the 407 through the Clark/Darlington Townline interchange taken earlier this evening. The 407 portion of the construction project is just about ready to go. Almost all of the lines are painted, and many of the signs are up:

I could see the 404 meeting highway 12 in about 10-15 years. Having 412 extended north to it and up to 11 likely is within 20 years.

Now, what may happen is , 412 goes to 11, and possibly to 400. 404 could be extended east to Peterborough and out to Ottawa. Those are likely beyond 20 years.

Where is the 412, which I assume will see its toll removed, going to meet 11 though? Going through Rama and down Orillia Bypass will mean taking out a park by the lake, and meeting 11 at Washago (aka going along Old 169) means missing the west leg of 12 by a good distance.

Also what about Highway 9? AADT and congestion will only increase. I was hoping that the Bradford Bypass will stretch west past the 400 to address Orangeville too. From there, it can probably hit Fergus and go down to Guelph and join Hanlon Parkway. Now, assuming that Conestoga Parkway will get extended to Komoka (outside of London), one can see where this idea of extending the 402 to Ottawa (hence completely wiping Highway 7 off the map) comes from.

Obviously, in this configuration, 410 needs to go up to Shelborne and meet this Bradford Bypass Extension NE of Orangeville. Oh boy it feels like I'm playing SimCities right now.

Breathe.

The others I don't know yet. I was making my comment based on the 404 and 412. The 412 could be extended up to Washago. If went that way, it coudl be given a straight line more or less all the way to the 400, and could even line up with 12W.

But it’s crazy to hear that OPP there didn’t bother you for 25 over. I always have the impression that OPP West are pretty strict (especially on the 401).
I don't think they really bother you unless you're going 30+. Or I've just been really lucky lol

I was reviewing Phase 2 plans for Waterloo Region's ION LRT and I noticed it runs along King Street between Highway 8 and 401

I also see the proposed flyovers missing from the 8/401 interchange in the plans. Probably part of a separate project? That area of King is already a mess- would be even crazier with the LRT without these put in. Should be done first if possible

The proposed flyovers are shown in that link you posted. Is there something else you were looking at that doesn't have them?

I'm not sure what it is about the pictures of the empty highways under construction, but it just beckons me to take a car out there and wind the thing completely out, Autobahn-style.

Not that I would do it, but if I could....

I may have gone for a ride or two on previous unopened sections of the 407 with friends from the MTO.
