It's just a beautiful piece of art. It's a failure any other way you look at it. It's not the only stadium design ahead of its time either.

I don't think anyone can say Mosaic was a typical Canadian stadium. At one time you could say that most of the stadiums looked alike, not anymore. Hamilton is about as close as you are going to get to the "old school" and even it is a significant departure.

Not so much 'ahead of its time' as much as 'a future that never came'.

It's a stunning piece of architecture that kind of was the send-off to the 1960s euphoria that Montreal had lived through.

There's been a definite movement back to pragmatic since then. Maybe for better, maybe for worse.

I saw the mock-up briefly on the news. Its tiny and will have sick views on old montreal and downtown. And no roof.

That future never came because the stadium alerted everyone to how ruinously expensive that future was. By the time it was (sort of) done, it was said to have cost more than every other existing domed stadium combined.

No roof? MLB is going to have to schedule their first home game in May, otherwise be prepared for multiple season openers to be cancelled

If it makes Montreal feel better, there have been more expensive stadiums built since then.

The Expos got by without a roof 1969-1986, did they have to cancel any season openers? (I don't actually know the answer, but I don't recall hearing of any...)

There have been more expensive stadiums built since then, but none to my knowledge have been so far out of whack with the 'going rate'.

It would be like building a stadium today for $10 billion or some other crazy number that is roughly 10x the cost of other stadiums that are comparable in terms of their function.

Not really. Look at the Impact/MLS. The Big O hosts some early season indoor matches for the Impact when the weather is still too cold to play at Saputo.

An eventual MLB team in Montreal could do the same.

Either way, it will hold 32k and have no roof. At least thats what Bronfman seems to be going for.

Just play the first few series on the road, whats the big deal. It doesnt need to be until may. April 15 should be fine.

If Minneapolis can have a roofless ballpark so can Montreal. Target Field should be the model the Expos 2.0 try to build off of.
