This isn't true. A diesel truck can be idled at high idle, 1400RPM, for days without running out of fuel. Just think about it, you're saying a truck will use as much fuel at idle as if it was driving at 50km/h.

An idling semi uses less than a gallon of diesel an hour, call it 4L or 0.13L in 2 minutes. Since a semi might do 50L/100km, that's actually 260m.

Yikes that's gross. I sure hope Tesla and others can make big rig EVs economical.

I recall that the Daimler semi is also coming to market soon, if not already.

This is all I could get online:

Quote:
Gesa Reimelt, head of e-mobility at the automotive group, told CNN Business that the new eActros took about five years to develop and could be on the road by 2021.
"When you ride the truck the CO2 emission is really zero," Reimelt said. "Now if you look at the energy consumption, if the energy is green energy that is charged in to the battery, then it's zero as well. So this is huge."
The trucks, which are being tested in Germany and Switzerland, have a range of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles). Batteries power the drive system, as well as braking, power steering and air conditioning.
Tesla has been testing for about 2 years too I believe, I'm not sure when they expect to hit the market but it seems to be taking some time.

Tesla is also looking at long haul. That isn't happening with the range Daimler has above.

Well, they already are very economical hence why they carry all our stuff. The truck uses ~5x more fuel than a car but carrying 100x the payload.

Best not to count on Tesla for anything at this point regardless of what ol' Musko tweets out at quarter-end. Most of his promises lately have been stock pumps just before Tesla posts another revenue loss.

Electric long-haul HGW trucks are a nice idea, but the weight of the batteries alone will make them unsuitable for most roads and highways.

Revenue loss. That's a new one. I think you mean income, but it's hard to take your opinion seriously when you mess up something that basic.

Yeah, sorry, income. Oh, and way to be rude. It's always nice to see that to really get a good discussion going.

Regardless, Tesla not being a healthy company is hardly an opinion. Unless you only frequent Electrek and Cleantechnica, you don't have to look far to see an increasing number of serious sales and service-related complaints, executive departures, and legal issues (i.e. SolarCity).

Yea, WarrenC12 what happened? In my impression, you were civil* in the Vancouver subforum. It seems that ever since you started commenting on the Canadian forum, you have gone down.

* Others can correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not really that active here anyway, just commenting here and there because I spent some of my formative years in Richmond.

Ps: This is also my first time seeing the spillover effect from the Vancouver subforum to the main one.

Yes they continue to exceed sales records every quarter... how is that possible if the company is failing?

I'm not going to get into an argument about Tesla here, but ya, guess what, you get called out if you post one liner garbage.

And yet somehow I'm not the one adding nothing to the conversation. Yeah, guess what, we all make mistakes and I mixed up one word. No need to be a pedantic dickhead.

No it's the Tesla FUD you're spouting.

Bottom line is nobody has an electric semi today. Tesla is close and so are some others with prototypes. Tesla is still the world leader in EVs.

That was the discussion until you chimed in with some nonsense.

Love him or hate him, at least Gregor Robinson actually rode his bike to work. That's the kind of climate leadership we need more of, IMHO.

Bridge or tunnel? Metro Vancouver to give Massey replacement recommendation to province

Quote:
Commuters who drive through the Massey Tunnel every day may learn Wednesday what shape its replacement will look like.

A Metro Vancouver committee created to provide input to the provincial government on what a new Massey crossing should look like is set to make a recommendation on which of the six remaining options they want to move forward with.

"We want to be writing some guidance to the [Ministry of Transportation], so they can take that and start working on the business plan," said Metro Vancovuer chair Sav Dhaliwal.

On Wednesday afternoon, the committee will provide details on the following six options to the provincial government.

An eight-lane bridge.
An eight-lane immersed-tube tunnel.
An eight-lane deep-bored tunnel.
A six-lane bridge.
A six-lane immersed-tube tunnel.
A six-lane deep-bored tunnel.

All of the options except the eight-lane bridge and immersed-tube tunnel call for using the current tunnel for dedicated transit lanes or a multi-use pathway — but the report given to the committee says upgrades would be expensive, and TransLink is against using the existing tunnel for transit.

Dhaliwal says that if the task force makes a recommendation on a preferred option or two, the province can begin public engagement, with a business plan scheduled to be completed by fall 2020.

The most optimistic timeline for a replacement to be completed is 2025 or 2026.

Didn't it already leak they want an 8 lane bridge, with 1 lane either direction to be for transit?

We're both guessing, the leak was an "8 lane crossing":

Floating bridge FTW.

Sure, but the mayors sent a letter to the Premier recommending the tunnel.

I'm beginning to support the catapult option myself.
