It’s not necessary for a fire department to have aerial apparatus capable of reaching the height of every building. These buildings are constructed with fire protection built in to assist in fire suppression before the fire department arrives. Stairwells are designed to eject smoke during a fire, this is to assist evacuation. Having to rescue someone though the window of a building this size with modern fire protection is not common. It’s the older 3 and 4 story buildings that you gotta watch out for.

New 9 storey residence for UPEI fronting University Avenue.

Construction should be starting very soon on this as they hope to have it ready for 2022.

UPEI will soon have its fourth residence on campus.

More details on a new 260-bed building that will bring the capacity of university housing from 9.4 per cent of the student body to 15 per cent were announced at UPEI on Friday.

The $60 million infrastructure project is expected to be done by 2022 and complete UPEI's transition to a temporary athletes' village for the 2023 Canada Winter Games.

Following the games the residence will provide year-round housing for post-secondary students.

"Students are facing the same housing challenges as many Islanders," said Premier Dennis King in a release.

"This is a good step forward to help students focus on what matters most to them. The stability of knowing they have a place to call home all year long will positively add to their student experience and academic success," King said.

The new housing facility will also include 22,000 square feet for lecture halls and multi-purpose space.

"The new residence facility will also feature a number of classrooms to alleviate some of the pressure on our academic space," said Alaa Abd-El Aziz, UPEI president in a release.

The province is contributing $20 million toward the housing project, with UPEI funding the remaining $40 million.

Interesting! I hope Summerside Fire doesn't rely on sprinklers alone to squelch fires and save lives regardless how fire-suppress-capable the building is.

Look at other cities with actual mid-rise buildings, let alone towers. The highest ladder truck in North America will climb 13 or 14 floors, around 130’. Charlottetown can reach 8 or 9 floors, possibly 10 if they can position just right and conditions allow.

Unless I'm much mistaken, building codes generally require fire suppression systems and specific stairwell and fire escape construction standards for structures above certain height thresholds, partially because there are no ladder trucks that can reach that high.

It would be in the national fire code, as well as NFPA standards. Sprinklers work, they’ll never replace traditional firefighting, but they at least give occupants a chance of survival in modern buildings furnished with highly combustible materials. A few decades ago, in some cases, people had up to 28 minutes to escape before conditions would be non survivable. Today, people have seconds to get out. Most rooms flash over in under two minutes - fire trucks haven’t even rolled at that point. But back to your point, yes, taller buildings require a lot of fire protection - I believe anything over 3 floors, but I’m not 100% sure of the different aspects of the code. Charlottetown is looking at beefing up its own bylaws to require sprinklers more often, after recent events.

Good idea! I would like to get one from Fort Amherst as it's the best view. My Nikon camera doesn't have the lens to do it.

Something you don't see in most larger cities in Canada. There are benefits living in a port city. Very nice!!

The steel is up!

They should have added another 3-4 floors on top as condos. They would sell!!

Note: the first two floors are much higher then the top three. I'm not sure if they are 12 ft or could be more.
The overall height is higher than a 5 storey building. More like a 6 or 6 1/2 storey.

I thought the second building was going to be 28 units, while the first building is only 16.

P.E.I. leads provinces in population growth for 2nd year

This explains why you see the obvious explosion of different folk from all over the world in the Charlottetown area. The buses are busy, University/Colleges, new businesses.......but no where for anyone to live.

Where are all those developments they were talking about?
