On my drive home yesterday, I noticed that almost all of the concrete has been demoed/removed and that there are several large spoils piles on the site.
As a side musing, the soil in the spoils piles actually looked quite good.

Yep! It’s coming out of the ground now.

Currently there’s four luffing cranes in WC.

just drove by.

They are definitely digging down now. When does it get changed to u/c, after the foundation is completed?

also, the entire area w of congress from the river to 8th street will be amazingly dense soon. unrecognizable. I know we say that a lot, but holy moly, this is amazing.

It kinda needs its own district name since it seems so cohesive and connected but separate. What do you all think? I'll toss out the first 2.

So, so true. If we see The Republic and 6x UC at the same time -- which is seeming more and more feasible -- I'll probably die of skyscraper overexposure. Or at least come away with a bad burn.

Usually not until the actual foundation is in, either pouring concrete for the foundation or drilling for caissons. Sometimes columns even go up before the slab foundation does. Anytime that there's actual construction happening of a part of the building's structure.

Ehh I think we have enough district names, even double names for some. I refer to the area between Guadalupe and Lamar from the River up to 7th the West End but of course you have Seaholm and Market District which cover the same area. It gets too confusing if every couple of blocks is considered a separate district.

I honestly don't even think of downtown in districts. To me it's all just downtown. Maybe sixth street and congress avenue are their own special things.

Exactly. Plus downtown is really too small to have more than just a few nicknames for the size of the chunks they make up. In big cities, districts or boroughs kind of act like landmarks. In Austin, it seems kind of gimmicky.

I like the idea of creating district names. It sounds sophisticated and I like the organizational aspect of it, but I really think it just complicates things since there isn't always a clear definition of uses or a feel between one neighborhood from the next, and it can be a bit confusing sometimes since there isn't always a uniformed method applied. For example, is it West End or Market District? Or is it both? And wh does the Seaholm District really need a name when it's rather small? The Green Water Plant next to it was at least double the size, and we've pretty forgotten about. That neighborhood now has been folded into what we've been calling the 2nd Street District after it was expanded.

The Seaholm District is different than the Seaholm Project. The Seaholm District extends from Lamar to San Antonio, Lady Bird Lake to 5th Street. It wholly encompasses the Green Water Treatment Plant development, even though Green Water feels more like the 2nd Street District (that was quite deliberate).

The site prep is awesome to see. But as far as I can tell, they are not permitted to do anything past demo. Maybe this is somehow considered to be part of the demo?

The site plan was posted to the AULCC page today, and the height is 514 feet and 44 floors, though, it also shows a 45th level, that may or may not be an occupied space. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the final height is when the site plan is approved and released.

They looked to be removing old footings. We might see all that soil go back before actual construction starts.

It has floors numbered to 46, and level 45 looks like an occupied level. But there is no level 13. So it still appears to be 44-stories officially.

I moved the posts in the latest homeless discussion to the Off Topic thread. Homelessness is becoming a big issue in Austin and is frequently discussed here. So it is probably worthy of a dedicated thread if anyone wants to start one.

I now see where the extra 2' came from for the previous 516' height. The South elevation starts at the very specific height of -4' and 6 1/2" and not a range of -4' to -6' and 1/2". Nerdy, I know.

This week's AULCC files include a detailed plan for this projec'st crane. It even shows where the jumps will happen. Here it is at its tallest.
