C'est la vie. Established metro systems also have service interruptions all the time.

If the issue is some kinda code, then there’s a major design flaw not having some kind of override, either on the train or from the control centre.

They do I'm sure but they have to verify it each time that it's a false alarm. If they didn't the delay would be way longer than a few minutes.

For comparison, the TTC had 15 minutes delays on both lines 1 and two today

STM had a shutdown on green and delays on orange

You don't realize how unreliable elevators are until you live in a building with them, and I imagine until you have a metro you don't realize how often they break down.

Good Day.

Nice reality check. Thank You.

This is when the patience and experience of users shows - in and during the resultant platform congestion.
And also how well the platforms are designed for crowd accommodation.

True. It was worse on Saturday.

We were through there today. Track level fine, not bad on the concourse, got progressively worse as we rode the escalator to street level.

On the way home, we took the elevator from the street to skip the smell (it wasn't completely successful but not bad.)

Had a 12 minute wait for a train due to problems on the line. Spent over half the time on concourse, the remainder on the platform and the smell wasn't bad at all. Of course, this was mid-afternoon, not rush hour. Not sure if more bodies makes the smell worse.

Those systems are decades old. Ours is brand new. This is our second breakdown on Day 4.

Brand new be systems tend to have higher rates of faults. Teething issues, as they call them.

Name one system in recent history that hasn't gone through this during the introduction of new rolling stock.

Not every public servant who lives in Ottawa and works in Gatineau, works in Hull. I don't get why everyone acts like every Ottawa to Gatineau commuter is heading to Hull. Not remotely close to true.

And a Trillium or Rapibus connection across PoW does not negate other bus connections to Hull from Ottawa's downtown. It's simply another transfer point and route.
You like to argue with me, but both our positions have much more in common than you will admit.

I am looking for sensible solutions that address the greatest needs just as you are. We all look through our personal lenses of where we live to some degree. There is no denying that. I am an advocate for the south end. There is nothing wrong with that, is there? Of course not. The Confederation Line does not serve South Ottawa effectively.

I have never rejected the need for a downtown tunnel. I never said the Chiarelli plan was perfect. In fact, it's biggest flaw of all, was the lack of a downtown tunnel more so than the originally planned surface route. The writing was on the wall, and no matter what, the next step needed to be the tunnel. It needed to happen in the same time frame as has happened. Whether the politicians would have understood that need under different circumstances is another question. The Trillium line after 15 years as currently planned is a poor replacement for the original plan. I hear your comments on that plan but they aren't going to change that plan at any point for decades to come. That has been my primary complaint that we are building a 🞵🞵🞵🞵 phase 2 that does not address many of the current Trillium Line flaws.

Also, my comments about the lack of trunk line service from the south end to downtown is nothing more than regret. I know it isn't going to happen as a result of decisions made in the last ten years. This isn't going to change. I acknowledge that, but understand, that offering no trunk line route from the south end to downtown is going to curtail ridership, just the same as if we ran rail from Orleans to Hurdman and required everybody to transfer there. It is no different.

We have already waited 15 years to run rail south of the airport. Traffic issues cannot allow delays another 10 or 15 years. Sorry, not acceptable. We cannot have a plan that builds neither roads nor transit.

We built the Queensway to Orleans while it was still a sleepy rural village. The genie is already out of the bottle south of the airport. No more waiting.

I do agree that double tracking is important but we have already waited too long and it is the city's fault for not coming up with a proper plan since 2006 to accomplish this.

I totally agree. I just transferred at Spadina subway Station. Guess which was the closest transit route for transfers at the station? It was the Spadina streetcar.

Yep. This is inevitable. Just experienced a temporary shutdown of the Bathurst streetcar. Not because of an accident, but a broken down streetcar. I watched as they prepared to use another streetcar to tow away the broken down vehicle. This will happen from time to time, whether a heavy rail commuter, subway, LRT or a streetcar. This can happen with any rail system when there is a breakdown. The line has to shutdown when another train is blocking the track. The downside of rail, which we hope will be seldom.

Rode the Confederation Line for the first time today. Rush hour from Bayview to St Laurent.

My impressions:

1. Above the doors and windows there are vents in the body. On some trains, there is oddly shaped putty holding bits together and loose wires visible through the large vent gaps. Rush job?

2. The floors of the trains are uneven (slight ramp at doors and more ramp over the bogeys.

3. The seating is tight, especially for legroom on the two facing two seat sections.

4. The trains were already pretty full at rush hour so maybe a LRT won’t have the capacity to grow. We will see after October 6, but I think we should have done a high floor metro system for added capacity and growth.

5. Some of the platforms are too narrow... especially Blair where the transfer to buses had people moving slowly to squeeze between the train and the stairs to get to the exit.

6. People in Ottawa need to learn to stand right and walk left on the escalators. This is normal in Europe. But in Ottawa people seem to like to stand all over the escalators and block traffic flow.

One more item to add. There is still old infrastructure that has not been removed (e.g. disused bus ramp to the old transit way). Will these just be left to weed away or will they be removed?

Service back in east end LRT after 'immobilized' train removed

Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: September 17, 2019

Service has resumed to the eastbound LRT after a “immobilized” train caused a 40-minute outage Tuesday afternoon.

The city’s media office sent out an announcement saying: “Full service has been restored with residual delays. We had one immobilized train at Cyrville Station that was diagnosed by a technician. Service continued to operate on a single track from St-Laurent to Blair Station. Customer volume was low at the time. Full service continued from St-Laurent to Tunney’s Pasture Station. The train has been brought in, and customers would have experienced delays.”

No further reason was given as to why the train was immobilized.

Transpo first notified riders of the outage between Cyrville and Blair stations at about 1:30 p.m.

https://twitter.com/OC_Transpo/status/1174024666048081922

Transpo tweeted at about 1:50 p.m. that it expected the delay to last 14 minutes.

In addition, two platforms at other stations were temporarily closed. Passengers were asked to use other platforms.

Earlier, the brand-new line had a 15-minute stoppage at the uOttawa Station, apparently because the doors jammed.

For the smell issue, a lot of systems have that particular smell. If you to Montreal and you approch a station or enter one you'll notice it straight away. In Paris it's even worse. I think it has something to do with Ozone created by the breaks.
As for the breakdowns it's totally normal, can't go to Montreal wihout experiencing at least one delay or Breakdown. Remember these are big and complexe machines. The easiest way to avoid these problems are by driving trains manually. Cause there isn't as much computers and automatic systems involded.

Parliament station smelled normal this evening. I have no idea if it's been cleared out or if I just didn't notice.

I think I would have noticed if it were still there though.

I've never noticed any sort of smell whatsoever when entering Montreal's Metro. I've definitely noticed a humid muskiness to the air at times but never a smell like what's at Parliament Station.

I agree, though I haven’t gone out the O’Connor street exit in a couple of days and I think that one had a more noticeable smell at all times I went through the station.

- 1st time was Thurs Sept 12th at night as I was lucky to be invited to one of the final drill nights. My GF played an injured person for the scenario so we were some of the last people to leave the station after all the other folks had ‘evacuated’. The smell leaving via the O’Connor exit was noticeably strong at the top of the escalator going up from the middle concourse.
- I have been through the station at Parliament both morning and evening every day since Sunday and each time left and entered via the Queen st. exit/entrance...have not noticed much of a smell there ever TBH.
- I have not noticed any smell at the platform level on any day either.

Seems to have been between the concourse and exit level and more centered around O’Connor. On Thursday last week I thought it might have been related to the remaining building work being done there to the office tower.

No idea though...
