It's the absence of shear walls or cross-bracing that concerns me. As well as the 'soft' first storey with heavy cladding above.

Would those have been present prior to the demolition? Your point about the 'soft' first story and heavy cladding above is well taken. I'm actually impressed that it is so completely tied into structure versus being a quasi-free standing applique.

There are pretty big holes in the middle of the building - I'd imagine there would have been some shear in there. But I have to assume they know what they're doing, and not risking the whole thing collapsing at the first sign of shaking. But anyway, I'm

I was inside the old Canada Post building once for a political mailer drop-off and it was just gargantuan inside. Immense clear span areas, double and triple height areas, huge truck ramp down to lower levels, etc.

No residential - that was the old proposal.

From the website updates:

Demolition continues through the North end of the building as well as selective demolition of the façade.
Salvage of the exterior granite continues along Dunsmuir Street, the curb lane will be used for pedestrian traffic while this work occurs. This work is expected to be complete at the end of October.
The lowest level concrete slabs will continue to be placed over the coming months.
The suspended concrete structure for the second below grade parking is underway.
The concrete foundation for the South elevator bank has been placed and the first level of elevator walls is being constructed.
Shoring work for the West Georgia plaza will continue for the next 2 months.
The Hamilton Street sidewalk adjacent to the building will be closed for the duration of the project.
The Hamilton Street southbound curb lane will be closed daily from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm (Monday – Saturday).
The Homer Street sidewalk is currently closed for the installation of the new steam service.
The Homer Street curb lane will be used intermittently during the day for deliveries.
All activities are executed within the parameters of the City of Vancouver’s building bylaws.

thanks thats what I thought.

So much misinformation about this project and projects in general. People think Amazon is building a warehouse to distribute products from this building as well.

i thought where was supposed to be a warehouse for Amazon? the original building was a warehouse and would make sense if some of it had that ability still. it isn't often that there is a warehouse in the middle of a downtown core for a company that wants to deliver things like groceries, etc. i would be wrong though.

No warehouse.
It's higher value property - so offices.
Amazon isn't going to rent AAA space from QuadReal for a warehouse.

The 450,000 sq ft warehouse is out at Tsawwassen.

I really hope that within those square hollowed cubby holes on the Post Office panels, that they will have these lit with LED lighting from within. These would allow for different color effects and take the darkness away with modern tech. Anyone agree? I am a believer that if we are not going to be a high vertical city (damn viewcones) then hopefully we will have star quality building designs and start lighting our builds to the max. Vancouver was once known for our neon, maybe we can attack LED effects. Oh, and don't get me started on the roof of Hotel Vancouver being so dark and dingy, where it could be super lit with flood lighting, the lit vibrant green would quantify Vancouver's lofty 'Green' goals......

Yeah I'm sure wasting energy on lighting up a roof is "green". If you want to see stupid cubes of LEDs go walk over to BC Place.

The 4th crane wasn't mentioned in that Sept 6th update.

I think there'll be enough lighting from within to light up the window grid without the need for backlit panels (where the reddish brown panels are). The smaller punched holes might be kinda cool lit up.

The renderings have depicted the little squares as being lit. Time will tell whether that nice touch is actually implemented.

That's the reason I said right from the start VAG should have obtained this for their gallery. it's ideally suited for a gallery space. I'm sure there could have been arrangements made between the Feds and the City to exchange parcels of land if necessary.

Now they're stuck with a proposal which will likely never get funded.

IMHO it would have been an easier "ask" than going full-on "edifice complex". Remember VAG wouldn't have had to do the same level of reconstruction on the building that is happening now.
