I think I just squirted. An enormous investment in Calgary's future, jumpstarting two of our biggest ongoing cultural institution proposals.

Feds commit $110M to Arts Commons and Contemporary Calgary expansions
CTV News | August 31, 2019

Quote:
The federal government is committing $110 million in funding for two infrastructure projects that will benefit Calgary's arts community, but the money is contingent on other levels of government providing financial support as well.

Calgary Centre MP Kent Hehr made the announcement Friday morning at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

The feds are pledging $80 million to Arts Commons for its two-phase expansion and $30 million to Contemporary Calgary for work renovating and expanding the Centennial Planetarium.

The first phase of the Arts Common project will see a new, 173,000 sq.-ft. performance centre built on the northwest corner of Olympic Plaza, which will have 1,500 seats in three theatres.

Phase two will involve revitalizing the existing Arts Commons facility.

The $80 million in federal funding is contingent on the province and city providing the remaining $135 million needed.

Once complete, Hehr said the Arts Commons space will support 1,000 jobs in the city and provide a $95 million boost to the local economy each year.

The full cost of the Contemporary Calgary project is $117 million, with the city recently announcing $25 million toward the project to complete the first phase. Another $30 million will be needed from the province and $32 million from the private sector to complete the work.

What a ridiculous waste of space. No one appears to have thought this through. If this is about housing homeless veterans well, 15 of 2500 is downright pathetic. You could probably sell the land, get 15 studio units secured in the future development and, have plenty to spare to build a sprawly, idyllic "park " on cheaper ground (including elsewhere in Canada) that will actually make a dent in the homelessness

Why not move all the homeless veterans to Sarnia? Better weather and much cheaper land costs.

Mid-rise news:
1521 Queen Street West
Parkview Arms at Queen & Strachan - hotel redevelopment
287 Davenport Road at Bedford Road- Burnac Corp's next luxury condo site
4700 Bathurst Street - Frontdoor Developments redevelopment

Centrecourt has 2 more sites in the pipeline: 254 Adelaide Street West beside the firehall and 250 Church Street, hopefully replacing a parking lot

820 Church Street - behind the Toronto Reference Library, IBI Group designing a new condo/hotel - maybe another Manga?

I agree - this is a ridiculous development for this site.

It doesn't seem bad as a placeholder. Calgary land doesn't seem particularly hot at the moment, not as much as it might be in 15 years (or 10 years ago).

This is cheaply built and easily demolished.

That seems like an incredibly short sighted opinion... like if you've read anything at all about this initiative, including the link I posted, you'd see that this is part of a nationwide effort to end homelessness for the 2500 homeless veterans across Canada. The first three are in Alberta, and not sure where the rest will be. But it's not just one 15 unit development.

A charity group is building a 40 unit residence for Homeless Vets in Ottawa at the former CFB Rockliffe. The project grew significantly during the planning phases. I don't have the initial number of units, but I believe it was less than half.

Ottawa shelter designed specifically for military veterans struggling with homelessness

The federal government will announce financial support for Canada's first shelter designed specifically for homeless veterans Tuesday, a month before construction is scheduled to start.

The Multifaith Housing Initiative is starting construction in August to build the 40-unit home for military veterans struggling with homelessness at the former Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe, east of downtown Ottawa.

"This building has been very specifically designed for the needs of [veterans] … the first of its kind in Canada," said Suzanne Le, the charity's executive director.

"The issue goes way beyond Ottawa … we want to see veterans houses [like this] go up across the country."

With the federal government's support, the charity is hoping the project will inspire other cities to build their own veteran-specific homes to deal with the Canada-wide problem.

The exact amount Veterans Affairs Canada is providing to Veterans' House will be announced Tuesday at 1 p.m., but the shelter is expected to cost $11.5 million.

Veterans will be able to move in around October 2020, roughly 14 months after construction begins, and they will be able to stay at the shelter as long as they want, Le said.

The charity will work with the Royal Canadian Legion and Veterans Affairs Canada to identify future residents.

The home will offer shelter, as well as mental health and addictions support.

The building itself is specifically designed to care for the veterans by strongly focusing on communal areas, as well as calm outdoor spaces to help deal with mental health issues, such as night terrors, Le said.

Some of the suggestions brought up during a lengthy planning process involving partner organizations and experts include a fitness room, a mediative garden and a dog yard for those with service dogs. These areas will all be included in the new home.

"We are recognizing that as a population [they] kind of have a very strong unit mentality," Le said. "We've kind of brought it back to that."

Soldiers Helping Soldiers, an Ottawa-based organization serving military members, says it encountered over 375 veterans staying in shelters over the last three years, Le said, adding that it's a country-wide issue.

"The research indicates that it has a lot to do with the transition," Le said. "They have issues transitioning from a military culture and lifestyle to a civilian culture and lifestyle."

Soldiers Helping Soldiers is planning to offer peer mentoring support to veterans at the unit.

Instead of a monument or plaque, the project was chosen to commemorate the military history of the Rockcliffe airbase by providing a safe and affordable space for veterans who are struggling with mental health, addiction issues and homelessness, Le said.

"[It] becomes a living commemoration of that military history, continuing to serve veterans in need," she said. "We've been working on this project for five years so it's taken us a long time to get to this point … I'm really proud."

You're being short sighted not looking beyond housing veterans and that the concept is being tested in Alberta. My argument is making the most of limited funding. Building 15 units on space that can be designated for hundreds of units remains a waste. I'll repeat since you didn't read my post the last time. The not for profit that owns this property could sell it to a developer, secure 15 apartment units for veterans on this site and have more than enough to expand the program greatly.

I like this concept. The housing is cheap to build and familiar to veterans. It takes a ton of space at a scale that makes an actually dent in homelessness This requires building in cities that are much cheaper than our major cities and certainly not a downtown.

The buildings can also be relocated. It's still a horrible placeholder as it will require relocating veterans ........ homes to another part of the city or into apartment units at this site. You couldn't ask for worst publicity no matter how you frame it.

Not great... like at all, but not terribly offensive I guess. One of the first substantial TOD proposals along Calgary's Green Line, at Quarry Park Station. 330 units total and each 13 storeys...

That is horrific!!! Remington needs to stick to office buildings and nothing else. Those mansard style roofs are atrocious. FAIL!

Edit: Is that the construction going on next to the canal in the parking lot beside the Co-op? It's nice to fill that sea of asphalt but this looks just awful. If that's the location this will be quite far from the lrt station.

I'm pretty sure I asked this before but can't remember the answer... Is the Teatro building being preserved and left alone?

Nice to finally see some traction on this one. How long has it been in the works for? A decade? Nice to see that the addition respects the main structure and accentuates it.

I don't know if I'd say atrocious. If they were downtown I'd be pissed, but this is actually better than anything I'd expect of Remington. I'm certainly not saying they're great or even good, but they're relatively unoffensive, except that the roofs — for sure.

Anywho, yeah it's definitely easy walking distance to the train. Directly south of Coop, directly north of the canal, and directly west of the new YMCA. It's the perfect spot for a high density node in that neighbourhood.

The ugly mansard roofs will be the most prominent feature anyone will see from all surrounding areas. I agree the density is nice, but my God that looks like a proposal from over a decade ago. It reminds me of those ugly seniors towers above Northhill Mall.

The Seniors Towers above Northhill Mall are worse due to the fact that what they overlook is equally soul sucking. The first time I saw them in person I cringed.
