Good to know. You could still put a two-way street there though but with no parking spots. Looking at Google Maps, I see that the width of the buildings in the same as those that are more southerly on Robinson street.

Huddle article about the recently opened K&M Saffron Tea House on East Main Street.

Another example of ambitious immigrant entrepreneurs improving the diversity and cultural richness of the community.

We definitely don't have anything like that in Moncton, I'm sure it will do well. Glad to see them here.

On my downtown walk this morning I came across a tidbit of information. I was walking on Victoria Street and saw two men walking the empty lot on Victoria and Archibald where the proposed new apartment building is to go. I talked with them and asked them if they knew when the building would be started. I found out that they were the general contractors for the project and that construction is beginning right after Labour Day next week. It will be 32 units with underground parking entering off Archibald Street with the building facing Victoria Street. I asked them when the projected completion date is and they stated that right now they are looking at June, 2020. I thought that I would pass that along as many were wondering about this project. So, more construction for the downtown area.

Tire Shack Brewing Company has completed the exterior, but there is a lot of work still be done inside.

Mayor Dawn Arnold gave her usual synopsis of the Moncton city council meeting held earlier this evening. This little tidbit was interesting:

Quote:
1. Approval of financial incentives for 100-112 Cameron Street (residential development, 72 units)
This would correspond to the office building, initially home to Marine Atlantic, and more recently the home of MacKenzie College (recently moved to the old ALC building on St. George Blvd).

The plan is to convert the building to a seniors living complex, and build a second connected six storey tower right next door. If financial incentives have been granted by city council, I presume that this project must now definitely be a "go", and presumably will either proceed later this fall, or more likely, next spring.

A story in the Moncton newspaper this morning states that the sale of the Assomption building to the Ashford Group closed at the end of August. The story says that they will be meeting with the city to discuss plans for future development.
I remember seeing a plan about a year ago for a new east-west street south of Main Street to open up more land for development. That would be a game changer for downtown Moncton.

I've also noticed that the former detention centre on Assomption Blvd has been sold recently (according to the sign out front).
I wonder what the plans are. Could be very interesting!

Yes I noticed that too. I wonder if Ashford Group has also purchased it. It would make sense, and the timing as well. There's a lot of surface parking that could be developed, incorporating parking structures. It will indeed be interesting to see what happens.

Yes, Ashford has also bought the old jail. Apparently there are plans to redevelop the land including a parking structure but no firm timeline as far as I know.

It looks like work is going on inside the building now. There's a bunch of cars parked there today.

Quote from Shane Mcgee CBC:

"Ashford 770 Inc., which recently purchased the 20-storey Assumption Place tower, for a price that's not yet become public, today bought the Old Cosmo Complex building for $1.1 million, property records show."

Is the old Cosmo building fully leased at this time?

Ashford is on quite a buying spree in the downtown core.

They're obviously consolidating a large parcel of property. It makes you wonder what they are planning on.

The acquisition of the old jail is a necessary precondition for the next phase of Downing Street, and the development that will line the west side of Downing. Supposedly the city wants to relocate the city market here, +/- the city library. A parking structure also seems likely, as well as a large condo/apartment building.

With Ashford now in control, I would wonder about the future of the surface parking lot behind Assumption Place. Once a new parking structure is built, then this land could be redeveloped around the proposed east/west street that the city wants to put in there. If the city market relocates, then this new street could extend further westward, at least as far as Robinson Street.

If the city library were to relocate, then Slate could redevelop their space for a Blue Cross expansion.

This spate of land sales to Ashford could be the start of quite a domino effect in the core. South of Main may be unrecognizable in 10 years time..........

Is this really going to be the future of downtown Moncton? With Ashford consolidating oodles of property, perhaps..........
