We Still Love Living Downtown: But Now, With Baby!
When Mack and I first shared with some people that we were expecting, the first question we were often asked was, “So when are you moving?” Our love for living Downtown is well documented, and though we knew raising a child in a very urban neighbourhood would come with some challenges, I couldn’t imagine trying to navigate being a new mother in a new-to-me area, too.

I also don’t drive, so it was doubly important to reside somewhere not only walkable, but with good access to public transportation. It’s easy to become isolated as a new parent, but I wanted to be able to continue my pre-baby lifestyle that did not depend on a vehicle. Although our household does own a car (which Mack drives when necessary), we want Emily to be familiar with a variety of transportation options.

Now, after almost a year and a half of seeing Downtown through child-tinted lenses, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. What follows are some of my reflections on our experience (so far!) in raising a baby in Downtown Edmonton.

On July 29, the City started accepting applications from businesses interested in operating e-scooter, bike, or e-bike shares in Edmonton. Operating permits have now been issued to two vendors and we will likely see e-scooters in Edmonton shortly.



We wanted to share this with you because we’ve worked with you on bike education or traffic safety in the past and thought you might be interested!


E-Scooters may travel on:

Bike lanes

Shared pathways

Roads with a posted speed limit of 50km/h or less


E-scooters cannot be used along sidewalks or unimproved trails in parks

When parking, there will be no docking stations. It’s important to ensure shared scooters are not blocking doors, travel along sidewalks, or access to important amenities such as fire hydrants or pay stations.

Downtown Public Places Plan

Has ETS advised about transporting scooters on buses and LRT? Of course bikes and ebikes can board the LRT in designated cars and bikes stored in the bike racks at the front of the bus. But what about scooters on the bus or in the rack?

I find it odd that private owned scooters are not being allowed but commercial business is allowed in Alberta. I wish the City and Province would outline the rationale for that - before the courts step in and say the public have a right to operate

I'm not a cynical person on paper. But the COE in the last 5 years has trouble maintaining basic services. Never mind the huge construction project screw ups and lack of basic planning principles and management. So when I see all of this...these days...i do a slow eye roll. But hey....prove us wrong

Downtown roads go car-free for massive street party

Walk, roll, stroll or dance through the streets at Open Streets, a street party championing a more human-centred Edmonton.

Open Streets invites you to play in the streets, as more than a kilometre of Downtown roads go car-free for a few hours this summer. Free activities include a bike parade, games and fitness classes. Meet your neighbours, enjoy the food trucks, live music and more at this family-friendly street party.

Date: Sunday, August 25
Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Downtown Edmonton
Jasper Avenue, between 103 Street and 109 Street
108 Street, from 99 Avenue to Jasper Avenue
104 Street from Jasper Avenue to 102 Avenue

Road closures

The following road closures will be in effect on Sunday, August 25 from 6 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Full closure of Jasper Avenue, from 103 Street to 109 Street. Cross-traffic will be permitted at 106 Street and Jasper Avenue, with vehicles being held and released.
Full closure of 108 Street, from 99 Avenue to Jasper Avenue.
Full closure of 104 Street, from Jasper Avenue to 102 Avenue.

Alternate routes

To detour around these road closures, use 97 Avenue, 104 Avenue, 101 Street or 109 Street.

ETS detours

A number of bus routes will operate nearby, with active stops along 101 Street, 109 Street and 104 Avenue. The event can also be accessed via LRT using the Enterprise Square or Corona Stations.

Routes 1, 2, 5, 100, 128 and 130 will be on detour from 5 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 25.

Bike lanes

Take your bike and get there using the City’s new bike lanes. A bike lockup will be available on-site.

High Level Street Car

Jump on the High Level Street Car for a bit of history on your way to the festival. Hop off at the final north stop and travel two blocks east (a five minute walk) to join the Open Streets route on 108 Street. Find stop, fare and schedule information on the Edmonton Radial Railway site.

Parking

Parking will not be available on the event site, with additional restrictions in place during the event. Please obey all signage, as tag and tow will be in effect.

given i didn't make the rules - which state that the scooters are only to be used in bike lanes, paved shared-use pathways and roads with a posted limit of 50km/h or less and they're not allowed on sidewalks - what would the dollar value of the tickets that could be written from this photo alone worth?

These things are finding their way all over the city it seems. People seem to be riding well out of downtown and abandoning them in parks and school yards well outside their operating zone.

I'm actually surprised how few we're seeing around. I hardly see them downtown at all compared to other locales that have them, they seem more prevalent on Whyte.
