West Coast Express prices without West Coast Express conveniences like a washroom, laptop plugins, snack bar.

Red Arrow in Alberta that operates between municipalities operates these fantastic buses that are very popular. There are some areas that Greyhound serves that Red Arrow doesn't but for the most part, no one misses Greyhound.

Someone complained in the comment section over there that it's nonsensical to have DDs on the 620 if they have no place to store them. He also mentioned that the buses that do have luggage racks are rarely used for 620 trips.

Idk about you, but I don't think the 70 Swartz Bay route have buses with luggage racks iirc.

Luggage rack buses have been scrapped in favour of these coming in. Someone I know in maintenance said that there is some talk of installing racks on a few of these for the 620.

In any case, the scheduling for buses from Swartz Bay is more spread out, and the fact that especially in the summer, people are using route 81 to go to Butchart Gardens. All leads to better crowd management I guess

They should've done it on the (relatively) newer buses, but whatever, I guess.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So the 81 and 70 are more like Victoria's analogue to TransLink's 250 and 257 than the 620, and they are. (I just compare their trip schedules and they are more spread out than the 620's trip schedules.)

Same, I wish they retrofitted the hybrid artics instead of the old blue diesel ones.

Correction, the 72 (and the 71 to an extent) is the "250" to the 70x. 81 is just a more specialized service to Butchart Gardens.

TransLink came out and said the current system isn't able to support it, without an upgrade:

When I was in Melbourne on vacation, the SkyBus from the airport to Southern Cross station had luggage racks in the lower level.

in Tokyo the subway, all the ones I rode on had racks above the seating.

like in this pic, alot of people would put their briefcases on them

I still insist that the system would of been better off without a tap system for now, given that it cost us north of $200 million to get it up and running and it will take years to pay itself off in recouped fares. Every single step of the way with Cubic's garbage has been costly problems and delays.

more like it was naive to not have faregates in the first place.

Anyone know what services Translink gets for the $12 million a year they still pay Cubic?

Sociopolitics, more like. Both transit and city planners wanted to encourage people to ride the new train instead of "gating it off," or something to that effect. It seems to have worked.

The real mistake was sticking to the three-zone system well past its obsolescence. That and having Cubic as a subcontractor; they've royally screwed up in Ontario, (England's) London, Brisbane, Sydney, L.A., San Fran, Miami and Chicago as well.

Maintenance? I have to say the faregates always seem to be working, rarely a major issue. As compared to say... escalators.

$12M seems cheap to be honest. It's probably a hardware maintenance contract. If it includes software, that's even better.

I see people throw around what looks like a large number, but when you look at Translink's total budget, and what they do every day, it's pennies.
