Regarding the activity at the old Payless location, I wonder if this could be for Journeys shoes?

This post from our [Retail] thread from back in March listed all the stores new or renovating at CF Champlain that we were aware of:

At the time, We knew that Journeys was interested because of a job advert on Indeed.com. Every other store on this list from March has come to pass, except for Journeys. I wonder.............

The assistant manager of American Eagle in CF Champlain replied to the post on Retail Talk & Share and said that American Eagle is setting up a temporary location in the former Payless Shoe Source, while they renovate their current store.


And in regards to Journeys, back when the advertisement appeared on Indeed.com, Retail Talk & Share posted about it and someone who works at Little Burgundy (Journeys sister store) said it was for their store not Journeys. And today, Retail Talk & Share posted about possible rumours of Journeys coming to CF Champlain, and someone commented on that post saying that she asked the manager of the Journeys in SJ, and the manager told her that they tried to get in CF Champlain but the rent was too high and the volume they would need to sell in the store was way too high.

In my opinion, I think they should open a location in Moncton/Dieppe, because it's interesting/weird that they are in Saint John (McAllister Place) & Fredericton (Regent Mall) but not in Moncton or Dieppe. Anyway, hopefully they can find a good spot somewhere.

Thanks. Justice is opening in the Mapleton Centre, and there are a couple of other vacancies in the same strip. Journey could easily set up there too..........

Probably a good thing in terms of the long term stability of this chain.

Canadian Tire seems to be becoming a retail empire, now controlling multiple chains. In addition to others such as Marks Work Warehouse, I recently became aware that CTC has purchased PEI houseware icon Paderno last year.

Condensation of recent discussion on the [Moncton] East thread:

1) - Day & Ross is relocating to Caledonia Industrial Park.
2) - a question was posited to Councillor Greg Turner as to what would happen to their old site on Mapleton Road.
3) - Councillor Turner replied that he was aware that a development of the old site was planned.
4) - Forumer BaseballFan stated that JDI has purchased the old Day & Ross site.
5) - the SNB Property Assessment site confirms a sale of the old Day & Ross site on June 14th for $10.4M
6) - there is a longstanding rumour that Kent might relocate from Wheeler Park to the old Day & Ross site.
7) - JDI owns Kent.

Is this evidence that the Kent rumour is true????

If so, what does this mean for the present Kent location in Wheeler Park?????

The Kent and (former) Costco properties are adjacent to one another. Could this mean that this land could be assembled for a massive redevelopment???

What could go here? My hunch is new retail, anchored by a relocated Cineplex with an IMAX and potentially a Rec Room. An expanded entertainment complex would explain why we are seeing restaurant expansion in the area (Kelseys, Milestones).

What do other people think?

I agree Cineplex expanding and turning that into an entertainment node seems the most plausible idea.

A second idea I just proposed in the other thread is for another consolidation of sorts. Canadian Tire buying into that space for a new building that can hold all their brands at once. So pulling in Canadian Tire, SportsChek, Marks, Party City and Paderno all under one roof (or at least in one building, even if the stores are separate). That would empty out locations on Mountain Road, but let them build bigger and have a bigger presence for people entering the city from Mapleton.

There is a candy store setting up in the unit next to DIY Studio on Mountain Rd. Kind of a Freak Lunchbox type of thing. Name unknown at this point.

Also, the video in the Bloomberg story says that the acquisition of SportCheck has proven to be very profitable and successful for Canadian Tire.
They plan to add more Party City stand alone stores in Canada as well as carrying their merchandise in Canadian Tire stores. Smart.

I really hope they succeed, Moncton has never had much luck with candy stores. I think maybe Bulk Barn is too heavily competitive but they just don't seem to make it.

On Retail Talk & Share NB a lot of people are saying Kent is moving to the old Day & Ross site. Also, the admin of the group got a interesting message:

So interesting message in my inbox....It says that "the former Costco and Kent's will be converted into new plaza space. Superstore will move to the former Costco and the it's old location will become smaller units".
This is a unvarified rumor but also is plausible.

Pomodori Pizza just announced on their Facebook page that they will be opening a new restaurant at 686 St George Blvd.

I try to get pizza there whenever I am in Saint John. Wood fired Neapolitan style pizza, along with Espresso and Gelato.

I know the Moncton market is saturated with pizza places, but this isn't your typical take out pizza.

They will be opening this fall.

Ah, OK, in that case they are locating in this new construction building interposed between the old paint store and the building containing the Terra Verde store, where Centennial Shakers used to be.

I put Centennial Shakers Lounge Moncton into the 411.ca address search, and it gives 686 St George Blvd as it's address. So they are converting the old Centennial Shakers tavern into the Pomodori Pizzeria and the new apartment building being developed will be behind it?

Building in question has been waiting for a tenant for a while now. They finished the renos last fall, if I remember correctly. See my drone photo from a few weeks ago.
And they went back two weeks ago and cut 3 windows on the east side of the building, which you can see boarded up. This work is already completed a few days ago. And the underground parking of the apartment in the back is already completed as well.

Thanks for this Budyser. That old Shakers lounge was a real eyesore. It's nice to see this property being developed. A few more customers for the coffee shop on the corner once the apartment building is done and occupied!
